Bad idea, though it's not like the law is being enforced very well on college campuses anyway. When my brother was at college, there were guys who were 19 and would drink alcohol.

I think it's not the worst idea ever.
Prohibitted things attract people.
If they aren't allowed to drink, they wait for a time when they can drink without being caught and drink a lot more than they would if they could drink anyway.

Where I live, drinks with little alcohol (like beer) are allowed for 16 year-olds, and harder beverages are restricted to 18.
Some really heavy things are 21.

Bingo

Also I drink sometimes, and I'm 15. Changing the legal age won't change anything.

Free healthcare.

So a more socialist system = better?

That's a VERY arguable point, to say the least.

(Not saying America is better, though.)

Also I basically agree with what M. Bison said.

More on-topic, I actually think that the system that Guinea mentioned sounds pretty reasonable.

I find it funny how lots of the non-Americans and Canadians are telling the opposite to shut up, or not even bothering. Good times.

A lot of people have already said it... it's a bad idea... lowering the legal drinking age will not change a thing, except some of them might drink more because now they can legally do so without being "caught"

Personally, underage drinking is a problem that should be solved and prevented by the guardian of the child... but as we all know, that isn't happening very much anywhere...

tbh it doesn't really matter what the age limit is. It's whether people drink responsibly.

Which is a pretty big issue over here. I think you Americans can be thankful that most of you follow these laws - it's really not the case here and since acohol's so cheap it's drank to excess all the time. And it always bottles down to the parent/guardian regardless.

However saying that, the bigger number the better. Because it's difficult to rely on everyone to be good parents nowadays.

Black Squirrel is totally right. It's more of a maturity/responsibility issue than an age one, but since 21 year-olds are marginally more responsible that 18 year-olds, the limit should stay at 21.
