Here's my try at that "spike block" thing:

Since it's impossible to have 3 even spikes on a standard 16 pixel block, I thought I'd have a little fun and make them uneven. As it turns out, that made it look a lot more painful and creepy. I tried to make it look rusty, too.

Maybe make them straight, but keep the size. I did suggest earlier to have the middle one bigger, but everyone has ignored most of my posts.

I tried that; it only works when they're skewed. Looks better too, imo.

I think the characters' size is alright, as they are only map sprites. They shouldn't really exceed 16x24.

And Sgt. DeeY, I don't see where you put Mario's head lower :/
