Yes, you heard me right. This is not meant to be technically anime-styled, strictly speaking anyway. >:L

Actually the style is loosely inspired by that of The Boondocks, the style of which was influenced by anime but is not actually anime.

But yeah, I tried drawing a woman in a different style from my previous attempts (and my previous few attempts basically sucked hard).

The quality of the images is kind of bad due to erasures on the paper + the scans highlighting those erasures + attempts to fix the image that didn't go ideally.

Smaller version (which was actually the one drawn first:

Might ink and color the larger one later.

C+C if you please.

Not quite in the anime style but it's great otherwise.

It's pretty good but I can't see it fitting in. If it helps, the actual Boondocks artist has an account at DA and you can probably study his stuff for a bit. S:

@The IT: He said it's not suppose to look like anime.

@Shawn: He said loosely inspired. Not "I'm trying an attempt at making Boondocks styled artwork."

Anyways, I'd say not bad. I'd say work on the ears, and shape of the head a bit more. The shape of the head makes it look very flat, and it's like you drew the hair on her head as if she were bald (literally in real life). There should be more space between the eyes, and the top of the head as well.

It's a good start, but needs a tiny bit of work. Did you just draw everything with few erasings, or did you actually use shapes to dictate the sizes? Most decent artists start by building the general skeleton of the body so they can create the size of the heads, and make the hair appear like true hair, and not just paper taped to it, if you know what I mean.

Also, a good eraser is necessary to. The soft white ones (I think they're made of polymer) are much better than those really crappy pink excuses they call "erasers"

Thanks for the comments!

@Soiyeruda: Do your comments mostly apply to the larger version, or do they also apply to the smaller one?

I might edit the sketch with your criticisms in mind and then re-scan it sometime, like later today.

Updated - see first post.

(The reason there was no post edit was because I simply replaced the images on Photobucket with the new ones, so the new ones have the same URLs.)

I didn't really fix everything that was criticized, partly because it seemed that too radical of changes would be needed for some to be implemented. But there are probably some improvements.

And yes, I did "cheat" by compressing the larger image horizontally in Paint.NET after scanning. The face was simply too wide to start with.

The eyes feel forced, as though you deliberately put the shines in, which is something I, admittedly, dislike about your work.

They need to feel more natural. I really can't explain how to do this, but the shines just somehow have to flow with the rest of the eye.

The more you do it and the more you get comfortable with them, it'll come to you, but for now, I'd suggest perhaps doing more like a single circular or ovalish shine in one of the corners of the eyes (the pupil/iris part, and how you choose to do them is up to you) and then as you work with them more frequently, experiment with different ways to put the shines in the eyes. Right now, they just seem really stiff and kind of seems like you forcefully put too much effort into them.

Apart from the fact that her head also seems to have this weird tilt to it, I can't really find much else to critique on. Barring that, you've got a good start going.

Pretty much what the others said. Not bad to begin with, but needs a little more work. The shine on the eyes doesn't seem very natural
