Coloured Version with added 1 hp life bar (that daredevil run pissed me off!)
I'll do a finelined version next

The life bar should appear more critical.

For example, add some lines around it. This makes it appear like it's flashing. Looks good, but, again, Mario looks weird. His mustache looks like it was put on wrong. His hair looks really long, which is unnatural for him.

You could make a Shy Guy - Goomba - Koopa - Bob-Omb Monster for all we care. As long as some protagonist is battling it.
