Honestly, a flagpole would be the perfect level ending.
Why would there be an item-wheel at the end of the level?
I like the flagpole idea because it makes sense: There's a castle, Mario puts down one flag and lifts another one, to show that he's in the castle. He may rest there, or go to sleep (so that the next level plays at nighttime).

I think this just makes more sense.

A flagpole seems a bit odd since we have levels that take place underwater and inside of houses. I have to admit that I like the wheel a bit more.

To be honest though, I think we should go for something simple, like a star or something and after you touch it, you go to a random minigame in a blank room, like a flagpole game, or the wheel.

Well we could have ourselves inspired by Wario Land, where you just leave the level through a special door and then can play a minigame.

That way we could probably use all these ideas.

But then: What is the goal?

I think we should have something that sticks out, but is small and durable so it makes sense to see it in various areas.

Maybe a spinning star (no face on it) with little sparkles flying out. It's simple, small, but still noticeable.

If you think flagpoles are overused, I can't see how you can suggest stars.

Well since Wario is in it, we could use special doors, like it has been the case in all Wario Land games (except for 4).

Because there is a difference between the two. The flag pole is only used in a few mario games, where as the star is in all of them. Saying the star is overused is like saying "Dang, those Mario games are overusing that Mario guy."

That aside, anything, including a special door could work. Maybe just have it be a door with a star or something over it. That would be cool in the Mansion levels since there would probably be a number of doors anyways.

I was thinking that for Wario, when he gets a fire flower, he could wear the Dragon cap from Wario Land. It would pretty much send out a plume of fire and would slowly die down. This would replace his dash attack, but would still cover just as much distance, only difference is that it can hurt spiked enemies (like a normal fire ball).

Heres an example.

Also, Wario will speed up if you hold ctrl (or was it shift?) to make up for his lack of speed.

You could always keep it simple and have a pipe exit that leads to a flagpole, like in Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3.

Anyway, here's concept art for an enemy, it's actually a concept I've had for a while, but anyway...

This beetle lives in forests or wooded areas of course, you can change the color of its leaves to suit the area, like whether or not it's fall or not. But anyway, this beetle disguises its shell to make it look similar to a piranha plant to protect itself. It is most commonly found on branches overhead and will fall when the player approaches, often spinning into them. Now since it would be in an outdoors area, you could have a windy level and have the wind affect the direction it falls.

I kinda like the pipe idea, but it would be odd in sky levels and some other levels. WHen I see a pipe in Mario, I think going underground. I think we should have a door that changes in different levels. For example, in water levels, if could be a cave or something (or a boat if the gHost ship is next), or some other kinda door like device.

Sky areas in SMB3 have pipes that extend up from the bottom of the screen and when you come out the other end you fall, usually onto a floating platform and can jump down safely. Meanwhile, with your idea what would you do for a door in the sky?

Maybe a mound of clouds with an opening, or just a gate in general.

Heres another idea:

user posted image
These could either be on the field of play and you walk through them, or attacked to the background that you push up to enter (so basically, they'd act as a normal door).

YES I like these.
While I was a fan of the YI approach from the beginning, I didn't want to blatantly copy the ring-of-flowers.
But this door solves stuff pretty well.
I'd say we go for the 2nd or 3rd or a combination of those.

A combination would be like this:

user posted image
You fill up the gauge with coins (100 coins for example would fill it completely) and THEN comes a roulette.
If the red marker lands on a dot, you lose, if it lands on a star you go to a minigame and if it lands on the moon you get ... a minigame with triple bonus?

And I'm guessing that the roulette only goes on fully filled marks?

You guessed correctly.
Oh well what we could also do would be that the dots and stars get distributed differently, like: 3 dots, 1 star, 2 dots, 1 star, 1 dot, 1 star, moon.

Here's a concept, with the Midas machine, Bowser and Syrup have transformed all of the Toads in the Mushroom Kingdom into golden statues. Our heroes may find a number of them hidden in each level and collect them. The number they collect changes the ending of the game in various ways. Whether you collect none or a few for various bad endings, or you collect all or most for various good endings.
