| QUOTE (Starman Deluxe @ Sep 26 2008, 01:19 AM) | I for one love the style. It isn't obviously massively intricate, but I think the cartoony style of it is amazing.
'Problem is is that too many MFGGers focus on how accurate, how detailed and how little flaws there are in it. Which isn't really what art is about, as far as I know.
Scan it, colour it, and that'll be amazing. |
If you like it, then good for you. There is a reason it's called C&C. The second C counts more. Criticism is what makes you improve.
Optimism and sympathy do not make an artist improve as much. And to be honest, I think the best method of improvement is to be pessimistic. Each of the characters that Yak drew take me under 1 minute each to draw. Each one looks like something that comes out of a 7 Year Old's doodle book. No offense Yak.
Criticism on the other hand, makes you improve much faster, because you are getting direct comments on what is wrong with your style, and how you should fix a certain element of it. Imagine if criticism did not exist. Many people wouldn't be as good in what they do, so overall quality of anything reduces. Its criticism that brought us to where we are today, and there is always going to be criticism until the human race dies.
I don't focus on accuracy. I focus on quality. Flaws are what you are suppose to find. Flaws mean things you could improve on and if you can get rid of your flaws, then your art will look better. Sure, art is for fun, no doubt. But if you want good art, you need to learn to improve.
Why do people post artwork on the Internet? Fame? Recognition? Critique? Fun? Show-Off? Most likely, it's to show off their artwork to let the world know, "look at me! I'm an amazing artist". However, the harsh reality is that the world is not totally sympathetic. The world will try to bring you down in everyway possible by finding every little pixel of flaw in whatever it is you do. Same goes for art. If you post art expecting everyone to give nothing but good comments, then you best hope it is from a bunch of noobs. The problem from comments though, is that they tend to be "I love the art!", "I like the way it looks!", "If I could have that picture right now, I'd stick it on my wall!". Those are just flattery. You, Starman, on the otherhand have provided a reason as to why you "love" the desgin, so that makes your opinion ok. If you post art hoping to get 10 minute fame from it, post it on Deviant Art or something.
Now, to sum everything up, the reason "too many MFGGers focus on how accurate, how detailed and how little flaws there are in it" is because that's what is expected from C&C. Criticism is a good thing. It helps you improve much much more than a simple comment. When you say "I think the cartoony style of it is amazing", it's sorta kinda like saying "keep doing all of your art in this style".

That's a jerk thing to say, bro. Also, to frefute your entire argument, criticism gets no one much of anywhere; it is constructive criticism that helps an artist learn from their mistakes. Blatant insults to their work do nothing to help them learn, because while it does point out their flaws, it offers no support or solutions on how to fix the, The point of constructive criticism is to help, not discourage (as is the goal of criticism alone). I could easily say equally degrading things about your art, but I chose not to, because I know for you, it's an accomplishment. Don't act like an elitist when it comes to drawing, because there indubitably is a number of people here that draw substantially better than you (and I, for that matter; I'm no fine artist), and you are in no position to tell people their art looks like it "came out of a seven year old's doodle book." That doesn't help and artist improve at all. It only makes them not want to draw anymore.
Be more considerate, please.

| QUOTE (Soiyeruda @ Sep 26 2008, 05:23 AM) | I'm typically blunt. I try to be nice, but sometimes, t's just it. I know it's not nice, but that's about the best way I can describe it honestly. Yak's drawing has definite potential, but I feel it needs to be redone, just because it looks exactly like a bunch of one minute doodles in my eyes. I'm not trying to be an elitist. I know that I'm far from being a great drawer (I'm always pessimistic about my work anyways.)
So yeah, I'll sympathize by saying "it has potential", but if I feel something has to be redone, then there really isn't much I can say. I'm not saying 7-year old doodles is a bad thing. It's just that I can't find anything else more to describe.
Anyways, here's my entry. |
I'm typically not only a blunt person, but a downright mean one, too, and I know it and I love it. That's no excuse to be a jerk though, for either you or me. Explain how it can be redone. What can he improve? What's lacking, and what will fix that? What techniques appear to work, and he should continue using? If you can't offer advice answering that question, than perhaps you should just keep your comments to yourself, because you benefit nothing other than your own ego.
Saying that it has potential accomplishes no more than blatantly insulting it. Yeah, it's a lot nicer and more empathetic (which by the way, is the right word in this context; not "sympathetic"), but it still doesn't help the artist in fixing his art and seizing that alleged potential. Again, if ther e"isn't much you can say," then just don't say anything at all. No one is forcing you to hit the "reply" button and insisting that you type a comment in the box at gunpoint. In other words, if you have nothing nice or constructive to say, don't say anything at all. S'that simple.
And even if you never "said" that calling something a "7-year-old doodle" was "a bad thing," it still is offensive. I could run around my college, calling everyone strings of inappropriate curse words, and then turn around and say "Well, I didn't mean it as a bad thing." Do you think, then, everyone's just going to up and forgive me? Just because I said "it wasn't meant as a bad thing?" No. Same goes for you, bro.
