(A Thousand Cherry Blossoms)
Because of the Sakura’s, or Cherry Blossom’s, extremely short blooming time, they are said to symbolize the short and temporary life we all live. How did this come about you ask? It all started a very long, long time ago. When the world was peaceful and the only thing people fear was death itself. More specifically, they feared the Shinigami (Japanese for Death Gods). The shinigami were invisible to normal, ordinary humans. Their job was to help guide lost souls to the other side, while they also had the power to decide when humans die and how they died. This story focuses on one shinigami named Shinu. It all started when Shinu fell in love.
One day Shinu was walking around the streets of the town of Rukongai, the town of wandering souls, he was upset that no one but other shinigami and his partner could see him. His partner was a human named Kyon. Kyon was able to see and interact with Shinu because he as high spiritual energy. At first Shinu was supposed to figure out why Kyon had acquired this power but, after a while they had become friends. They travel around together showing the dead lost souls the way to the other side. Kyon acted has Shinu’s information gatherer, since Shinu can’t interact with ordinary humans. That’s when they saw the most beautiful women they have ever laid eyes on.
Kyon had figured out her name was Sakura. Sakura’s parents had died when she was fifteen and she’s been living by herself for the past seven years. Kyon felt sorry for her, but for some reason he think he had fallen in love. The more and more he talked to her the more and more he was certain he had fallen in love with her. Shinu was there the whole time though. Although she could not see him, he too had fallen in love with her. Oh, how he wanted her to at least be able to hear him so that he could express his innermost feelings to her. He knew that there was only one way the two of them could really meet. He would have to kill her. But, ‘how should she die?’ was the question. She was beautiful and she deserved a beautiful death so, that all the people of the world would recognize her.
Kyon and Shinu kept their feeling about Sakura a secret from one another. Although, they could each tell what each other was thinking at this point of their “friendship.” They both acted normally around each other thinking of how to tell the other what they were thinking. Shinu started writing down ideas of how Sakura should die. He wrote a thousand different beautiful deaths for the girl named Sakura and couldn’t decide.
The next day while Shinu was out thinking about which death he should bestow upon her. Kyon noticed Shinu’s papers filled with writing. Kyon did not understand the shinigami language. All he knew was that when ever Shinu finished writing something that he would tell him to place it in this strange little black box. After that, the cause of death would take place upon who ever’s name was written on it. Shinu trying to act normally decided to place the papers inside Shinu’s little black box and left. He was going to meet Sakura at midnight to confess his love for her. And, to tell Shinu that he was going to stop being his helper to live with her.
Five minutes before midnight, Shinu and Kyon were at the meeting place. Shinu knew what was going on before Kyon even said anything. They had made a deal with each other. Kyon shall live with her until she or him died. Then Shinu would be her lover until it was time for her to pass to the other world. That would be when her and Kyon would reunite. They heard footsteps coming. It was Sakura wearing a beautiful pink dress.
Midnight struck. And all you could hear was Sakura’s scream in the once silent night. She was dying a beautiful and graceful death. So, why was she screaming in great pain? It became clear to Shinu and Kyon. She was dying a thousand deaths all at once. All they could do is watch her in pain for three minutes until she had disappeared. That many deaths must of scared her soul greatly. Her soul gave out and was lost forever they had thought. Shinu and Kyon felt extremely sad and took the thousands of torn remains of her pink dress and threw them into the air. They both scarified their souls and had become nothing more than a empty tree trunk. The remains of the pink dress feel upon the tree and became it’s leaves. This tree is known has sakura, or cherry blossom. It symbolizes the very short life of Kyon, Sakura and every human in existence. It blooms for a short time once a year when the scared soul of Sakura can be temporary united with Kyon and Shinu before it’s energy gives out again. |
