This isn't really a fangame, since it's original, but I still figured this was the best place to put it. For those of you who have been keeping up on the MFGG Wiki, you'd know that Paper Bowser World 3 is currently getting an overhaul. Fact is, there was just no way I was ever going to be able to pull off what I had originally planned. As a result, I'm rebooting the project. However, while Bowser's getting his act together, I decided to revisit my very first video game character, Toodles the Horse. It's been nearly three and a half years since I did a game about Toodles, so I figured it was about time to bring him back. Of course, none of you have played the original four Toodles games, and frankly, you probably wouldn't want to, either. (They aren't that great) Regardless, I thought I'd show off this little tech demo of Toodles strutting his stuff in a test room. It's runs pretty well. It's a modified version of the Bowser engine, so a few of the quirks are still present. More to come soon!

EDIT: Updated with a new version that improves the helicopter tail move.

Controls:
Left and Right Arrow Keys: Run left and right
Up Arrow (while on the ground): Jump
Up Arrow (while in the air): Helicopter Tail (it works like Rayman's hair)

Yeah, the game was just getting way too bogged down. Don't worry though. It's not canned. I'm just redesigning it to be more manageable. I just figured I'd work on something else for a while I get that sorted out.

EDIT: As for other games, I suppose I could post the original Toodles games, but they really are quite terrible. (Except for Toodles 4, but even it isn't that great.)

Well...Neither really.

It's because they just kind of..Float there. You could at least make them float depending on where Toodles' head it. Like when you slide, they stay in place. sad.gif

You should do something about the eyebrows though. You should move them after Toodles and before the Drawing Event.

Yeah the eyebrows aren't being set at the correct position.

And the helicopter needs some work. You move the instant you use it, and there's no changing direction in air. It makes it quite uncomfortable.

Well, the idea with the eyebrows was that they would kind of trail behind Toodles' head. I thought it would look silly. I'll mess around a little and see if I can come up with something that looks better. They way they work now, is that the Toodles object creates an eyebrow object on every step. The eyebrow object destroys itself ont the next step, so you only see one set. However, this makes the eyebrows lag behind Toodles since they never actually move towards him. I think it looks goofy, but if it's annoying, I can work on it.

EDIT: And, MechaBowser, I was thinking of changing the helicopter thing, anyway. That should be changed by the next demo.

The helicopter tail was sorta disappointing, I was hoping it would let you hover for a while(as in it would increase the height of your jump a bit and you could hover in the air). The basic platform engine you have now is good though.

Actually, the helecopter tail is now redone. It still doesn't let you hover, but you can control your glide a lot better. Remember that the move was based on Rayman's hair, not Tails' tails! I'm touching up the eyebrows right now, and then I'll post an update later.

I'm afraid I haven't played any Rayman games, so I didn't know what type of 'helicopter' type thing you were going for. I'm glad to hear the helicopter jump thingy is improved now though.

Okay, new update on the first post. I messed around with the eyebrows, but I just wasn't getting to goofy quality I wanted so I left them alone. I was shooting to make them act like balloons floating about Toodles' head and I think I achieved that, so I'm just gonna leave 'em there. However, the helicopter tail move has been completely re-done and I think you'll all like the results! Hopefully by the next demo release I'll have some graphics and stuff to make the game all pretty! Time to get crackin...

The eyebrows are still really akward and is nothing like a balloon effect.
Though you really improved the hovering, and I like it. You should make it so that once you've pressed up, and let go, there's no repressing up, though, because I always end up smashing the up button when hovering and it's silly.

EDIT: About the no re-pressing, I don't think I'll do that, because I've got some level designs in mind that might make the player want to drop and then hover some more, so I want that to be possible. Just don't smash the button! wink.gif

And I guess it's back to drawing board for those stupid eyebrows. I was just trying to give 'em some personality. blank.gif

Well if you made them stay at Toodles for the x position, but keep the way you did them vertically, I don't think it'll look half bad.

Okay, here's the deal. I wasn't going to do this, but Toodles 5 is a sequel and it's story won't make a lot of sense if you're not familiar with the other four, so as much as I'm embarrassed to post these, here's a link to Toodles 1-4. Each Toodles game takes place the day after the one before it.

Now, there's a bit of back story you're gonna need to understand, so here goes:

TOODLES THE HORSE:
Toodles was a cartoon character that I used to draw on chalk boards in my church during Sunday School. Everybody always liked to see what cartoon he would be in next. So for the first game, you run as Toodles through the hallways of my church, looking for chalk and avoiding the Anti-Chalk Blocks! These nasty default Game Maker sprited bad guys would like nothing more than to destroy all the chalk on Earth. Without it, Toodles can't star in anymore comics! Gasp! This is the first game I made with Game Maker. It's darn near unplayable so don't even try. Play TOODLES THE HORSE DELUXE instead. This was an updated version I made a month or two later.

TOODLES THE HORSE 2: It's the same premise as the original, but this time the Anti-Chalk Block King has stolen Toodles' costumes to get revenge. Toodles must travel to Chalkmenolikey, the home of the Anti-Chalk Blocks, to recover his costumes. Again, this game takes place in my old church.

TOODLES THE HORSE 3: Here's where things start to get weird. In between the making of Toodles 2 and 3, I designed a world for Toodles to live in and a bunch of new characters to go with him. I also became quite the Sonic fan during that time. This rather terrible game is the result. The evil MECHA-TOODLES has taken over Chalkmenolikey and plans to use the Vinegarizer 3000 to disolve all of the chalk on Earth! Toodles and his friends Bert Stein and Carl the Miner must team up to stop Mecha-Toodles before it's too late. Yeah, it's a Sonic Heroes rip-off. I can't believe I did that either.

TOODLES THE HORSE 4: Okay, now that Toodles 3 is behind me, it's time to make something good. This time, the Anti-Chalk Block King has created an army of evil Robot "Friends" to take out Toodles once and for all. This game is much simpler than the third game, and it's a lot more fun. If you've ever played the Game Maker game "Penguin Panic" you'll note some inspiration here.

The sound effects are too loud compared to the music IMO...
Also I agree that the tail thing should make you go higher to start with THEN do the hover thing.
