The reason he's so small in the ducking position is so he can be the height of a single tile of my tileset. Makes sense, so he can duck under a bullet bill or a small hole or whatever. I can see if I can make him wider, but can't make him taller

Games use masks that can detect an area smaller than the sprite's pixels. A little overlap never hurt anyone; just as long as the idea of ducking is conveyed, it isn'ta big deal.

Actually, the original ducking Mario was 4 pixels taller than one "block" of 16, and yet could still fit in 1-block cracks. He was also as wide as his normal sprite.
