I'm making a 2D mario game at the moment and I was wondering what breathing systems you prefered.

Any recommendation is welcome.

I thought they discovered a way to breathe underwater for unlimited or oversufficient amounts of time.

So I'm not voting.

I prefer SM64's water-life system. Also, this should be moved to Fangame Discussion.

I liked it.
It was also fun when you could use any water as an insta-healing by jumping into it.

It most likely was an unfixable bug, but a very helpful one at that.

That was a horrible glitch that made the game way to easy at times

I'd actually like the underwater life-system-thingy if Nintendo could've actually pulled swimming off properly. For gods sake the underwater controls for sm64 sucked.

Not really. You'd go pretty slow, and pressing the B button did nothing, that was about it. 3D water levels are never very good anyways, Super Mario 64's weren't that bad. I also think they were aware that water heals you, since wasn't it kept in Super Mario 64 DS?

I liked the OoT breathing system, where you would automaticly swim to the surface as soon as you started to run out of air.

I think you meant to make a Galaxy styled breathing system, since I think it's kinda dumb to lose health instead of air/oxygen and to get health out of nowhere by just jumping on the water.

So, yeah, there should be an Air gauge, and Mario should start losing health when that gauge hits zero. That even appeared in some Rare games like DK64, Banjo-Kazzoie and stuff, IIRC.

I loved it, but for challenge's sake, separate the breathe bar from the health bar. You could instant heal in SM64 by hopping into the water.
