it was due yesterday but I started today here, read it:

Fang Lizhi is what the French would call an oxymoronic enigma (Or at least, the ones who could speak English would.). Why? Well, aside from the fact that according to the Chinese media, the man was never born and currently does not exist, he also happens to be a Chinese Capitalist. Given the fact that most of China is in fact under Communist rule, with a government that is completely opposed to Capitalism, one could imagine how this may present us with a little bit of a dilemma.
Contrary to what you may have somehow previously heard mentioned in the Chinese media, Fang Lizhi was, in fact, born. Nobody knows exactly where, but unless he was some kind of failed scientific test-tube experiment intended to overthrow the Chinese Government (which could very well be a possibility, but not one worth exploring), the fact that Lizhi was born somewhere in China is a reasonably sound deduction. Given his current age of seventy-two years, that would mean that he was born in 1936.
So what exactly is it that makes Fang Lizhi a person of peace? Excuse my cynicism, but, not very much. He was a capitalist by nature, which, since capitalism is a polar opposite concept to communism, means that whether you see him as promoting world peace or destroying it, depends entirely on your personal views. Lizhi is no more a man of peace than you or I, in that he’s never pointed a rifle at anybody. Unfortunately, we live in a biased society where capitalism is pushed as the only true way to achieve world peace, so in the end I’m going to have to stop breaking the fourth wall and mindlessly ranting about irrelevant non-issues here, lest my application and thinking marks plunge further than they most certainly already have.
Despite my surprisingly uncommon opinion, I’ll at least explain what caused Lizhi to gain favour among capitalists. In truth, he once belonged to the ruling Chinese Communist Party, but he was dismissed (several times, in fact) for the voicing of his opinion against the government’s actions. At first, they appreciated the challenge and encouraged him to speak out against them, but then people started listening to him. The government hadn’t considered that. After people started protesting, China essentially erased Lizhi from existence.
The reason Chinese people probably haven’t heard him today is because of Chinese censorship laws which forbade the publication of anything they found inappropriate. If you were to search “Fang Lizhi” on the Chinese version of Google, the bottom of the page would display the following message: “据当地法律法规和政策,部分搜索结果未予显示。”. For the insignificant minority of us whom might not be fully able to decipher these moon-runes, it means something to the effect of “Due to certain laws in place, not all results could be displayed.”
Lizhi had no choice but to flee to America, where he could preach the evils of China without being attacked by any government ninja assassins.

I will most likely get several percent higher than a zero on this but I decided to post it here so that you could all be educated.

  • Rhetorical questions: bad
  • Use of first person point of view: bad
  • Lack of full and comprehensive analysis: bad
  • Constant use of passive voice (any form of the verb "to be"): bad
  • Length: bad
I hope you're not expecting a good grade on this. Or else I hope you're in a very low grade.

Yes, note the part where it was due yesterday and I did the whole thing in 2 hours (most of which were spent on my awesome title page which I can't show you because this board doesn't have font big enough for me to display my name in) and the fact that it's for religion class where we mostly just color and draw title pages

also about those points, it didn't need to be in essay format. If this were English class I might have taken it a bit more seriously.

Fair enough. Just because it's not for English though doesn't mean you shouldn't put any effort into it.

Also, wait... religion class? In my America?

no, canada.

Catholic High School.

I have all my compulsory credits, but my school requires me to take religion every year, so whether I pass or fail it doesn't matter. If they don't let me graduate, I could get my diploma from the public school board if I wanted.

Ah, righto, that explains a lot.

Question, though: do you like having to take such classes? Are they really broad (like a Comparative Religion course), or narrow and full of religious propaganda? I applied to a private all-girls Catholic high school years ago here in America, and I remember going there for a day to shadow this girl through her classes. I went to her religion class, and I remember I was just disturbed by how "YAY RELIJUNZ LETS ALL LUV GOD" they were. It was sort of a huge turn-off; I'm glad I didn't end up going there.

Last year, when I had World Religions, it was ok. But everything else has just been just biblehumping and coloring.

And as for the propaganda, they really like to teach us things like "The proper way a family should be," and "basic human rights" and stuff and then on tests, they'll phrase it like it's an opinion question, but if we don't answer with the catholic opinion, then it's the wrong answer.

"Basic human rights" according to Catholicism and the law are actually two different things by definition. Also that "family" googly-goop they feed you in class is the biggest load of bollocks I've ever heard and is another huge pile of feces in the face of government. So what are they doing -- unteaching you law and government? I hope you don't listen to them.

Pfft... oh, religion.
