@Luigi #1's Entry: Aside from the fact that Wario is a sumo (which is NOT a ninja, last I checked), and has a hammer (which isn't a traditional ninja weapon, last I checked) and should be katakana instead of hiragana, that's not too bad.
Just future clarification on the kanji, hiragana, katakana thing: Hiragana: Basically japanese alphabet. They're super simple to learn, but I think you figured that out. Typically, in japanese media, you'll rarely find hiragana, as kanji will have most likely infested the screen :P Katakana: Used mainly to "japanize" foreign words. Eg. Since a word for steak never exists, they use katakana to japanize it into ステーキ (Suteeki). I know it's used in many other cases (they tend to use katakana on Japanese words like ここ (koko, here) in anime for reasons I don't understand, but whatever. it's their language). Katakana should be easy to notice, as it's simple, and isn't all curvy like hiragana. Katakana also has it's own special group of pronounciations that isn't present in true japanese, such as ウィ、ヴァ、ツェ (wi, va, tse), used to help further the process of japanization. Kanji: Essentially symbols. Kanji is rather difficult to learn, as you require about 2000 to read just about everything in Japanese media. After that, they have more for extra cases. I think at least 1000 more. Anyways, each kanji represents a different meaning/meanings. Eg. the kanji 上 typically means "top". The problem with kanji though may be which way to start. The simple 3 stroke kanji are easy to remember, but they have many different meanings, and pronounciations, especially paired with other kanji. On the other hand, kanji such 癇 (kan, temper or nevers), are more complicated, but have only two meanings, and one pronounciation. Furigana: If you ever here this term, it's the same thing as hiragana. It's use is to be put next to kanji to show its pronounciation.
At your level, I'd just stick with the hiragana and katakana, and maybe learn a few simple kanji like top, bottom, big, father, etc. etc.
Anyways, nice to see a new face in the drawing competitions. If you'd done them before, then sorry I didn't notice. Hope to see you in the Top 5.

Sorry, it looks like I beat you to the who-can-better-show-off-their-weeaboo-Japanese-language-skills race.
Reading back is a good idea and prevents needless repetition, Soiy.

| QUOTE (Soiyeruda @ Nov 5 2008, 02:13 AM) | Actually, believe it or not, I read before hand and did not see definitions for the four things I've listed. And why is it a race all of a sudden?
So am I repeating something?
I believe not. You've said "your hiragana should be katakana" and "katakana isn't kanji". I'm just providing a description of hiragana, katakana, and kanji.
Unless I missed anything before that, which I believe I didn't.
And you're right. Reading back is a good idea and prevents needless repetition. Thanks for reminding me. |
He's in a Japanese class for Christ's sake. I think it's assumed he knows these things or else will be learning them in the near future; it's like teaching Pre-Alg. to a Calculus student.

Don't forget. It's Japanese I. When I went to Japanese I, they didn't teach me anything about kanji, other than they're symbols that mean stuff. I also didn't learn about furigana until about a month ago, and I'm in Japanese II. If I'm correct, by Japanese IV (end of highschool), most students probably would've learned maybe 100-300 kanji. If he was in Japanese II, I probably wouldn't have said anything. I am making my comments based on what I read, and my past experience. Yes, our Japanese I classes will probably be different, but I'm pretty sure they'll be similar. And if I'm wrong and he knew these, he can just say.

They don't teach you any actual kanji in J1, but I imagine the concept is still introduced, seeing as it's a fairly important one to the language. Just because he doesn't know any actual kanji doesn't mean he doesn't know what they are. Also, I imagine if he was that miffed by the words I used, he'd've asked about them a few posts ago.
Additionally, most Japanese students know furigana without actually knowing the proper word for it. It's pretty easy to figure out that those hiragana randomly floating above your kanji are the proper reading of the kanji -- even if you don't know exactly what they're called.
And regardless, kanji and furigana weren't even relevant to his picture, and even if he didn't know what they were, it really didn't matter to the constructive criticism of his art.
I mean, I could just start listing all the Japanese vocabulary I know just because I think he may not know it, but it'd be a digression and completely unwarranted. You don't need to post things just because you know them and someone else doesn't -- especially if it's not really relevant to the topic at hand.

| QUOTE | Er heres my final entry, there are however a few things creativly breaking ninja dress code. As for the background i think the darkness is more effective.
Too bad the only sheath that would fit the shyguys sword looks like a red rocket. I didn't do that on purpose lol. |
Hmm... I've been looking at your art for awhile, now, and your style kinda piques my interest?
Why the polygon-like composition? Is that intentional, or what? It's kinda cool.
| QUOTE | | We should rename this to Kanji/Katakana/Hiragana Competition #1. |
Irony: I won't even be entering this competition (I would have had I had the time, but alas... college).

Bingo! I always kind'a thought they would look like that if they wernt limited to 16*16 sprites, they could of done 15*32 like castlevania but it would damage some gameplay aspects, and lag with the hardware limitations (castlevania does it alot). Anyway you can't change the characters after everyone is so familiar with them; especial since furrys creep some people out, dont blame em, the disqusting internet is to blame, but a man can dream (and make freeware fangames lol) It seems im the only one thats done medevil clothing without influence from Naruto, besides the headbands, my sister has one and they look cool. Well the final result is tommorow, gl everyone.
