I've limited myself to 4 frames, so I can become better at animation. So far I have made a walk and idol (I think that's how you spell it):

and yes the whole game will be black and white with those exact 4 colours.

That's not really going to help you at all. Limiting yourself to 4 frames at your skill level is just going LOL NO TOO MUCH WORK!!! If you actually wanted to get better, you should make the walk at least 6 frames, so you get more than just the core parts of the walk

How do you know my skill level? I have only posted 3 sprites on here and already you've judged my skill? This may be simplistic but that doesn't mean I'm crap? Also I always do too many frames, I want to limit them to a small number any way. Buy if you really insist on it, then yeah okay I will.

1. Don't justify your flaws. We're all flawed(not me) and we all need to accept that we're not perfect and fix whats wrong.
2. Amount of frames =/= Quality of animation
3. Simplistic is often crap. I don't care if **** like cave story had simple ass sprites, that game ruined the spriting world by making it ok to make simple and crappy sprites.

3. Never liked cave story so much I would base a style off of it. But I do like simplicity. That sort of thing is down to opinion really.

I had a feeling you were 1up (seriously, mostly because you said "at my skill level" and I was merely asking, not saying that you were wrong in anyway. Anyway, I think limiting yourself isn't always the best idea, because it can actually make things harder sometimes. Limited frames doesn't seem to work all that well with these sprites either.

I'd suggest fixing up the shading, and possibly define a better shape, I'm not quite digging the general design of the character right now. Maybe make the legs more angular like the body.

Although it's a great start. Keep it up.

Less frames will make animations look less smooth.
More frames will make animations look more smooth.

It's still strange though, because it's like his face completely disappears.
I'd redo it over. Make it about 8 frames maybe? It's better to work in 4s when animation, IMO.

I also think you're using a bit too much contrast

try using less
