you have to stand on them for a while and they'll turn red and eventually explode.

But General Guy said it all. He told you to make up a combination which you would use to move Shy Guys, and you did. Each key makes a specific sound that your minions will recognize.

I haven't tested your latest update yet, but, at least in the previous, it just looks like red squares. It would be better if they looked like some kind of buttons. And when you're standing on them, they should fall down into the ground a bit. To make it more obvious.
