i'd like to throw out there, that as an atheist i've never found myself alienated during the holiday, most people seems fairly inclusive except to those who choose to not participate (I don't believe in that, etc). I don't consider it a celebration of Jesus, like the website says, it's just a hey cool it's a day where we give each other stuff.

i honestly can't say i support this 'war on christmas' ****. i do not care if susie jew gets upset if i wish her a merry christmas. christman, chanakuh, whatever, it's all a holiday to everyone who excuse me if i got it wrong for you. getting offended by me saying 'christmas' instead of 'happy holidays' is like getting offended at swearing imo: irrational and dumb.

i thought the purpose of christianity was to be good to your neighbours regardless

so even if christmas was all about jesus' birthday, jesus would probably have preferred it if we were nice to everyone else instead

I don't see this attacking christmas... I see it more directed at the people who are getting all uppity that people who aren't christian are celebrating it.

then again, he did get nailed to a tree for saying that the first time

in any case, the placement of Christmas on Dec 25 was literally a marketing decision. they had to make Christianity seem attractive to other folks who saw other winter solstice festivals like Saturnalia and said "hey, this looks like fun"

I guess it'd be like your parents strategically placing your birthday on the same day as some other kid in the neighborhood that they don't like, in an effort to get his friends to go to your party instead. If I were Jesus, I'd be pissed.

Impossible to know for sure. Not entirely our fault, but it does start off the new AD dating method.

Better off picking a day than disregarding his birthday altogether, regardless of it being conveniently placed.

The concept behind it is fine, (the whole be good regardless of what the truth is) but the in your face anti-god message really bothers me.

And to me the ad starts to sound like an intrusive bible thumper, if that makes sense. By that I mean they are trying to force or push their ideas on you, while rejecting whatever beliefs you have in the first place.

no, it doesn't sound like that at all. it simply asks "why believe in a god?"
not "don't believe in god."
nowhere near like "accept jesus or burn in hell"

it simply asks a question that many people, for some reason or another, have a blind spot to considering. it might make them uncomfortable, sure, but hopefully it might get people to think.

(which I know is a lot to ask)

I think this is a good idea. People are always being converted or bothered by religious folks, but it doesn't happen back.

I just find it very silly how people, just throughout the ages, have caused wars because of religion. It still happens today, even.

But yeah. I'd agree with the site. You don't have to believe it a god to be a good person. You don't have to be Christian to celebrate Christmas (heck, you could just make up your own holidays, and see if anyone else cares (o_o) ). And you certaintly don't have to believe in a god to enjoy life. Enjoy life how you'd like to live it. You don't need a Heaven as an incentive to be a good, hardworking person.

That's always been my philosophy.

I don't believe anything religious actually happened, but the teachings of Jesus are, for the most part, basic good practices and gestures of goodwill. I'm living my life virtuously, and that's what counts in the end.

The core isn't in God or religion.
The core is your goodness.

I don't feel like reading through this topic, but I'm sure some people have claimed that this is attacking religion.

Yes, it is. And that's a good thing. If someone were to put up a sign that said "Why NOT believe in God?", nobody would be upset. That's because religion is too widely accepted, and it's turning what used to be a private practice into a club that always gets its way.

I don't care about any of this propaganda. Both sides are equally lame of the world, I think.

I get the air, though, of making stupid propaganda just for the sake of making stupid propaganda and to make people riled up for no reason other than starting pissing matches (not referring to the pretty website in the original post).

I don't know if it's just me, but I see no shortage of "anti-"religion propaganda. I see more of that than something advocating whatever-religion. Still, though, both sides are blind and deaf and I'll be laughing away and eating a gelato in the bleachers.
