supersound is not complicated. There's an initialize script, a script for loading, a script for playing, and a script for stopping. Extremely simple.

MIDIs suck and mp3s do not load properly. Quit being so stubborn.

Use both, or remix the midis.

MIDI can be fine quality-wise, if you have well-sequenced (bonus if it's custom) MIDIs. My problem with them, at least in regards to click products, is that the multimedia layer in Windows that handled playing of MIDI files caused abrupt pauses in the game when looping.

MP3's load pretty much instantly if you load them externally using code.

QUOTE (DJ Yoshiman)
It's best to have a complicated system to shave off a megabyte or two for every single song, because it all adds up in the end and turns your fangame from a 50 MB nightmare to a 20 MB quality-sound awesome fangame.

50 MB is not really that much nowdays. Though I do agree that if oggs are smaller and have good sound quality, Spritanium should use them instead.

You should use MIDIs, then make a downloadable file to replace those MIDIs with MP3s for fast computers.

SPCs are also an option. And MIDIs work, when they're chosen well.

Tell me more about these SPCs.

Also, I'm just going to start ignoring anyone who recommends OGGs. Supersound glitched up for me, and I'm not interested in using it anymore.

XM, IT, MOD, MID, SPC, GBS, SID, whatever suits you. They're all generally small files and produce super swanky vidyagame-like songs.
But seriously, if you want to go for MP3s, think twice and get work around the supersound thing. OGGs are superior to MP3s.

MP3. MIDIs are overused and everyone always get them from VGMusic. WAV for your SFXs.

But, yeah, OGGs are awesome. You can mess with their speed/pitch/Hz.

EDIT: Oh, RS got a point, too, Track modules are great if you plan on using something that requires tempo, beats and/or speed changes.

Tell me more about these SPCs.

They are the sound format used in SNES games. They're small (64kb each), sound good and loop well. There's a driver at the mainsite that's easy to find from the misc section.

Depends on the graphics of the game, and the simplicity of the game.

8Bit = MIDI

16bit or greater= MIDI's + MP3's.

I'd suggest using Mp3's though. What I usually do is find a looping point in a song to shorten it to about 30 seconds long. Then I lower the bitrate only slightly and sample freq. This should make any Mp3 that's typically 3MB to atleast 1.5MB.(Although I use .Ogg's, which means a 3MB song converts to 300KB without losing nearly any quality in sound.)

Midi's..Well is a hit and miss. I generally dislike any game that uses them, and it's rare there's a fangame I play that has a nice selection of Midi's that aren't rehashes of Mp3's.

Yes your filesize well be bigger, but It'll also be that much more enjoyable. Also, 50MB is nothing. Of course, people will always still have windows 95 and dial-up connections, but I say make your game around the median of what everyone currently has.(1.5ghz with dsl connections) Not the absolute minimum.

It is if you're on a 56k connection, which, BTW, many people are still on.

also, oh yeah, i forgot about modules, those are definitely great to use and if you can use them, definitely do so over MIDI files

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using MIDIs, unless you pick the wrong ones. There are MIDIs out there that are appropriate, of good quality and aren't overused.

I voted midi, a well composed piece and/or well instrumented piece will sound great. If you ever got the supersound.dll to work then you might want to go for ogg.
