why does that even matter in a 2d enviroment

Knowing your video memory will give me a generalization of how powerful your video card is, again assuming it isn't over/under clocked.
Sprites take up memory, to be specific your video cards RAM. Anything on the screen probably takes video RAM but the point is simply this. What happens when the video RAM runs out. I THINK this an unlikly scenario but it can happen and probably lag occurs when this does happen.
I have underclocked my GPU and figured it has to display less sprites to maintain a constant framerate.

Unfortunately, people like me have old computers where the highest Video Card upgrade has only 32MB of RAM.

Also, if people don't goddamned check "Preload" on every sprite in their damned games, maybe the games would load faster.

Then you're doing it wrong.

You shouldn't be rendering "sprites" outside the window edges at all, and those inside shouldn't cause too much trouble unless you go like 5000x4000, which I really doubt.

Not quite what if you have a extrememely visual game, around one hundred sprites(alot of it are particles) on the visible screen with data at 640x480. You can do alot on a small screen space.

No one wants to support computers from the start of the decade, and for good reason.

100 sprites shouldn't lag

if they do you're doing it wrong
edit: or using Game Maker

But Preload in Game Maker slows down any game quite a bit.

Yes I'm using gamemaker and plus it's when I underclock my GPU it lags which is suppose to happen, in the experiment. In gamemaker objects consume more CPU and GPU usage.

I was mostly referring to his other comment because I've seen him bring it up repeatedly.

Far less than 8MB. That's why my computer can't run any GM games in version 5 or higher. Annoying, that.
