I know you all like to make engines which everyone can benefit from, and produce amazing games using. However, there has been a boom of these lately, and there's just so many doing the exact same thing over and over again. Please, no more engines. Use your own engine instead to make your own game.

Not making anymore engines (not prohibiting them, but discuraging the make of them) would result in stuff other than HMUWZWK, KEISXAAW, DDEFA and all the other shorts for engines. Its getting a real pain in the buttocks. And without them, we would probably see more Mario fangames, than just engines.

Now I know there are people who benefit from engines, but it has taken overhand. There's already 5 engines on the first page. That doesn't sound alot, but they just keep popping up.

For once, I would actually really like to see a game be made instead of an engine, as it would provide much more to the community as entertainment rather than just leave dull coding for people - and then it hardly ever turns out to be anything.

So basically, less engines, more games!

Yeah I have to agree it does get annoying playing the same game again and again.

Wait its a different game? Oh sorry.

Engines are great and all, but we don't need 10 variations of the same thing.

What do you get out of creating a universal engine on MFGG after like everyone else has created one? Sure, you'll get some attention, but unless it's absolutely perfect, no glitches whatsoever, and replicates the actual Mario games, you'll most likely be shot down.

I personally don't think you should use other people's pre-made engines anyways. They're great if you want a template, but you need to eventually move on, create your own, and don't reveal to anybody. (^v^)

The worst part is that people don't learn to do anything else with the engine. It's like playing with K-Nex or something and only building what is in the manual they provide you with, when there is so much more potential.

Engine use is ok, but seriously. Stop raping the engines over and over. If you have to, then edit the engines so they at least APPEAR different from each other. Add an enemy or two. Just stop recreating games with the EXACT same physics!

This is going to make me sound like a hypocrite since I JUST posted an engine a week or two ago but I agree. Besides stop using the same universal engine, another thing people need to do is to add more original concepts to your games. Slopes are nice so the levels aren't so linear and how about some unique powerups that haven't been done before? Hell, what about not doing a game starring Mario? The other Mario characters exist too! The game doesn't even need to be a platformer. Try something original now and then! (Back to the subject on my own engine, it's already been scrapped and I've been making one that's not going to be open source.)

I agree there are too many engines. Why can't we just have a whole bunch of excellent Programmers work together and create a few Super-Engines?

You're missing the point. If there were "super-engines" it'd be even worse.

Engines can be beneficial to a certain point where they aren't abused. My idea of an engine would be that it contains the pure basics. You HAVE to learn how to use it from scratch or you wont be able to make a game out of it. I learned a bunch of stuff from a pre-made engine, but it only had the core basics such as movement and a few other minor details.

However, yes we need more people making their own engines for their own games.(or alteast when you release it) It doesn't have to have pixel perfect movement or mimic an official mario completely.

Or atleast make it so the engine user has to edit the engine. Like just use the masks as sprites.

Use your own engine instead to make your own game.

This

This

This

man it would increase originality in games and there would be no 6000+ clones using the exact same engine by diferent people

if only people would do it (i do!)

I agree with this. I wouldn't mind playing 2 games that played the same but looked different.

mfgg is turning into smp

90% of the games are literally clones of each other

Or someone should make a basic, easy to edit engine. Blocks for graphics with the harder Mario things, like the basic powerups, stomping, shells, slopes, and jumpthroughs. Then have all the values (like speed) easy to find and change.

That would be ideal.

Sort of off-topic, but when it comes to engines, the thing that bugs me the most is that so many mainsiters have horrible taste in engines.

Can you believe how many times Hello's SMB1 engine has been used? And it's probably one of the worst open-source engines on the site - glitchy as hell and featuring physics that feel quite noticeably wrong (among other things).

And then, of course, there's the "clone factor" - all those games made with that engine feel so incredibly similar (mostly because a lot of them are minimal edits).

I think Engines should kill Sprites and Sounds and replace them with Masks for Placeholders. Or people could actually make a License for their Engine saying that if the Engine is used, they MUST replace the Sprites/Sounds/Etc.

but no one is going to listen to that. Black Squirrel's tileset clearly said "recolor this sheet" but it was still overused not recolored.

Plus if the user didn't listen to the creator its nothing that could be done. Unless the sprites were like, owned by the creator or something.

Technically, the Creator of the Engine owns the Engine, so the License provided with it MUST be followed, or the Creaor could get in Legal Trouble.

I have this disability where I can only make engines.

As in once I finish the core motivation stops completely.
