Technically, the Creator of the Engine owns the Engine, so the License provided with it MUST be followed, or the Creaor could get in Legal Trouble.

Or possibly, if people submit games that use pre-made engines with such a license, but the license isn't followed, the submission could be reported and removed.

People should start crippling their engines so they can only be used as programming references, and not templates.

if they were really awesome enough to make a game that ended up that popular, they'd change the sprite when asked

Here's an Idea that Phage will love. Let's ditch MMF, TGF, and GM and switch to C++ && SDL.

CODE
if (GM || MMF || TGF)
   exit(YOU_FAIL);
else if (SDL && (C++ || C))
   cout << "You are Awesome";

If you have to make engines, at least don't make all of them for Game Maker. That's my final offer.

I agree with MechaBowser here.
We should really find a way to discourage people from making engines.

That said, I'll take a shot:
DO NOT MAKE ENGINES ANYMORE! SERIOUSLY.
Create your engines, but make a GAME with them and do NOT make them open-source.
We have ENOUGH open-source engines, and in most cases BETTER ones than you make, we DO NOT NEED YOURS.

Even if your engine can't live up with the good open-source engines we already have, you can still make a GAME out of it that can take the spotlight when you have an original idea.

Take other characters than Mario, add original concepts, add original stuff.
Make games, not engines! Thank you!

Definitely agree on this front. My approach with every fangame project that I'm dealing with is that each one has it's own unique engine -- obviously for the main gameplay. For example, I finalized an engine for one of my two upcoming fangame projects months ago, and have yet to deal with getting starting with the engine for my other one, including setup.

Don't get me wrong, some engines shown here are good, but I'd rather create ones from scratch.

Problem is, how do one create an engine?

No I'm kidding. XP Most of the engines here are basically abused, while really the engine isn't edited, the sprites are. MC has a point that making engines from scratch would raise everyone's attention.

... that's not what he said though.

He said that people would rather make their games from scratch anyways, so engines are useless. You make it sound like every engine is based off another engine, and think that if engines were made from scratch (which they are) then the problem is solved - while it is not.

IF YOU MUST MAKE ENGINES, MAKE THEM FOR MMF2 INSTEAD!!!!!

There are like 30 Mario engines for GM, but about 3 for MMF2. And the MMF2 engines are **** for the most part.

Because of everyone abusing them? That's what kinda started this in the first place, though. >_>

I hardly doubt that would make a difference, since everyone would start downloading MMF2.

That's not the point of this topic though. Engines are a horrible concept and shouldn't be made unless they teach super-advanced stuff - which I have yet to see

I think engines are ideal to newcomers, but should quickly move on if they got the concept, but don't.

He makes his own engine or tries to convince somebody of his idea.

Or he holds the idea back until he can make his own engine for that idea and makes crappy "first games" in the meantime.

Your argument does certainly not speak for more engines, because even if the noob could choose from a brazillion different identical SMB3 engines, he couldn't do anything with his idea, unless it was "hey let's clone SMB3". (And we certainly don't want another bunch of SMB3 clones)

The question wasn't meant to support either side. It was just a point that I felt needed to be clarified.

I have a basic engine that I use for my games, it's just movement, slopes, jump and run.

I just have it so that I don't have to write the exact same ****ing code each time.

Engines should be like that.

Also, I could erase the sprites, make them boxes with saurkraut on them and release it.
