Not really. I read Leo's post, and I have taken into account what he's saying. My post was simply a response to you, Guinea.

I'm still not sure you understand why I take issue with this: "DO NOT MAKE ENGINES ANYMORE! SERIOUSLY. Create your engines, but make a GAME with them and do NOT make them open-source."

I agreed with Leo for a reason, so if you reply to me, you have to reply to what Leo said too. Otherwise I'll have to "link" you to Leo's post again, since this is the main reason why we don't really need more engines in the style of Hello's or Ultramario's.

Nothing keeps you from making an engine yourself, just expect people to dislike it.

Hell, what about not doing a game starring Mario? The other Mario characters exist too! The game doesn't even need to be a platformer. Try something original now and then!

To follow on from this, although it does mean you can't submit the game to MFGG's main site, why not make a game that has nothing to do with the Marioverse at all? As far as I can recall you can still post non-Mario-related fangames on these forums. If not, you can probably show it off on, say, a Kirby-related forum or a Sonic-related forum or something.

I think engines like hello's are great for people to download and make levels with, but not to be released as a "game"

Wasn't this a locked topic?

Instead of millions of engines, I would like to see a fully customizable game, so each person can work on it the way he or she wants.
.gm6 examples for Game Maker 6.1 would be acceptable if there was one index just for examples (free version, not Hello Engine 3).
With each completed example, you must give a detailed tutorial of how it's made, and how the commands can be incorporated in your game.

Does that sound ok Guinea?

I miss the days of fangames starting from scratch. Where the excitement was getting something to work.

But what if you have no programming talent and you're not interseted in programming
But you still want to make a game.
With your own sprites.
In that case Hello's engine comes in handy.

Afaik, old school gamer doesn't have a registered version of GM, thus can't use Hello's engine which is made for the registered version.

Maybe he likes Stencyl then.

That's a horrible attitude. I believe the term you're looking for is "how do I have my game made for me?". The solution: find someone who wants to help you on that.

This should probably be stickied and locked.

FGD arguments tend to be awesome ones that don't suck - I'll sticky it, but I'm not locking it unless an argument or the topic of matter gets discussed so much that repetitions occur.

I not too keen on programming but it's necessary to get to the other parts of game design that I enjoy thoroughly. Not everyone's a programmer! It requires a mindset of logical thinking and problem-solving. Some people have a creative desire to produce the artistic elements of a game but have little or no experience in the technical side of game design. Again, I never figured on being a programmer, I was drawn towards the creative bit of making my ideas come to life for people to enjoy.

Generally, if you were to enter the game industry in the future, wouldn't you be a part of a team? Isn't the idea to stick where you work best? Programmers program, artists design. Everyone does something, no one can do everything. Some people may never have the capacity or skills needed for programming or spriting. If he want's to create game graphics but doesn't want to learn a whole new skillset just to implement his graphics then I say let him!

I wouldn't call that " a horrible attitude". 8|

I've probably said it before in this topic, but I use engines, only I make them myself so that I can reuse them later.

Ultramario's Engine works with the unregistered version of GM.

Games that use engines all end up feeling the same though because they all move the same, have the same items, enemies etc. You can make levels and call it your own game but honestly, I myself wouldn't find that satisfying.

Hello suggested that too.
I too don't know how nor want to program, so I'm going with my strengths, unfortunately nobody wants to take ideas for games if I don't actually submit anything.

I just came up with a good one too, a set of mini games such as Goomba Pong.
Mario is in his plane throwing a goomba (worth 2 points) at a wall (it spins in the air before it hits).
Head on wall = squish (no points gained)
Feet down = bounce (catch = minus half, miss = minus all)
Feet up = fall and squish on ground (no points gained)
Feet on wall = stick to/walk on wall (minus 2 points, flatten goomba to get back points)
All side hits explode on impact (changes one solid block to a breakable block)

A star is present at all times allowing you to skip this level (one room time waister), however points will affect other mini games.

Note: The back of the plane shoots koopa shells at item blocks behind you.
Green - No bonus (hit flying koopas to gain more shells)
Red - Big mushroom bonus (better throwing power and aim when large)
Blue - Small mushroom bonus (bounce goomba off nose of plane)
Orange - Double points bonus (kill flying koopas in your way)

Object: Keep hitting breakable blocks (turn plane around to fire shells if expert) with a bob-omb (destroys all breakable blocks at once) until all bricks disappear (hit P switch with plane to release bob-omb on horizontal moving platform).

Important: There is no save mid game (will start over with 0 points until star is captured).

<lengthy post>

If you want people to make games for you, then you need to do a better job in advertising your ideas.

For example create fake mock-up screenshots of what you expect your game to look like. Just be a little creative there...

Also, I don't think there are many people out there who want to make your ideas into games as much as you do. Most people who actually learn programming or spriting do that to make their own games, so you have to come up with something really amazing if you want people to give up their own ideas and make yours instead.

Something really amazing?
I was really trying to go with the classics with a Mario theme.
Snake (Mario with tail that gets longer at each level), TRON (Mario, Lugi, Wario, and King Koopa in racing pods, player has choice of blocks to leave behind during play), beads (Mario drops blocks in pattern before thwomp crushes all blocks, can ground pound breakable blocks), Tetris (blocks in shapes falling from sky, Mario pushes blocks on ground to make room).
I'd also put in a scroller for Super Mario (flying Mario).

Unless you go to a professional company that actually has money to pay you, that isn't the right attitute to go into gaming with.

Coming to a fangaming board and expecting others to make games for you just because you can't do it yourself isn't the right attitude either.
You can at least learn SOMETHING that has to do with making games, not necessarily program, but how about spriting or making music?
If you can contribute stuff like that to a game, then you might find someone who wants to work with you.
If ideas is the only thing you can come up with, you won't get very far.

First of all I don't expect anything.
I'm making suggestions which I hope one day will be realized, however I know that day won't come any time soon, so don't say I expected this, that sounds like it's an order.
I thought at least Mario TRON (working title) would generate some interest (note blocks stall other pod with no damage, breakable blocks explode on impact, solid blocks crush other pod, coin blocks bring out star for ghost pod, item blocks bring out bonus (1up mushroom, shrink mushroom, extra health mushroom, extra life hammer, flame thrower fire flower).

I don't know how to draw or paint.
I guess I could take screen shots from other games and merge them with video screen grabs, but I don't have an upload space.
Is it possible to upload straight from your Desktop?

I don't know anything about music let alone have hardware and software to do it.
