How are directors looked upon in fangames? I don't really have any programming or designing talent, but I do have some leadership, worldbuilding, and teamwork talents. It's just something I'd like to have done, like get a team together, meet with the level designers, engine programmers, and maybe music composers.

pretty much every "director" i've seen is the "make my game for me and give me all the credit" type

The notion of a director is largely despised.

One mistake you never want to make when working with a dev team:

never ever ever take things too seriously

because when the director is having fun, your development team is having fun aswell

which leads to equality, people actually getting along, and talented people hopefully teaching skills to the people who are less talented/don't have the same skill as they do

which leads to a better development team that can create great games

as far as I'm concerned, a leader can be total **** with basically everything, but as long as he has fun with what he's doing he's a great leader

I wish I followed this rule while working on OoT2D, now I'm back to working solo

damn I need to get that team back together again sometime

Yeah a director should atleast work on some aspects rather than planning.

The Director should do more than Planning, as most Directors do. For example, they could test the Engine, help program the Engine, give feedback on the Music Designer's Compositions, etc.

I dunno, there can be 'good' directors too, as in if they plan everything out.
If someone has an incredible idea for a plot of a game and has everything planned out, from plot to characters, then I guess you would be entitled to ask for people to 'do the game for you'.
I mean, if you lack the programming skill but can do everything else then yeah.

But then again would that be 'directing' anymore?

In terms of fangame projects? I'd rather not be "director" alone. To me, it's just not enough. Sure, it's the first step in trying to figure out how you want the game to be presented, but if you're not able to put in the time to put those plans into action development wise, others will sadly frown upon the person.

I'm like: get the blueprint/script done first THEN do the necessary work to match it. That's all I have to say on my side of things.
