QUOTE (Soiyeruda @ May 3 2008, 09:23 PM)
- Program what you know you can program. Otherwise, some new problem is going to block you, and you'll just ditch that project.

if you get so extremely discouraged from not knowing how to program something then you're not really cut out for making a game :x either experiment to try to do it, or ask around to see if anyone can help you to do it. figuring out how to program stuff is fun imo (at least in mmf) and limiting yourself to "what you know" is a bad idea because that way you'll never learn anything new
QUOTE (Soiyeruda @ May 3 2008, 09:42 PM)
Like, what if we can't program? Then that's a problem.....why are you even attempting making a game in the first place? Go take a class x_x

i'm sorry but you don't need to take a class to learn how to use MMF/GM

Ambition and drive; wanting to see the whole thing come together. I usually do more actually work on a fangame in a weekly period than I do over the 2 year lapse of only slightly working on it.

Post a topic about it here to generate interest. Make a promise like you'll update weekly. If you find yourself not meeting the weekly updates, you're either too busy with something else like school, and should hold off on making the game, or you don't have enough energy put into it. Don't scrap the game necessarily though (although it's always an option), but tinker with the idea so you get something you'd like to make more.

once you learn the basic of the language there's nothing really left to learn through except trial and error

in before bawwwwwwing over a text wall when really this is one of the only ways you're going to learn it aside from taking college classes

programming is a really ****ing boring career, though

Big one: only work on something when it's no longer a chore. You'll know it's the right game when you enjoy the drudgery. If you don't have a problem debugging the same segment 100 times or tweaking design choices until they're absolutely to your liking, you're there.

don't get a "i can make all the code, music, sprites, etc on my own" mentality

i've done that twice now and i've already canned one game due to it

Yay! I have honestly always wanted to make a highly useful topic! And thanks for all talk and tips here. I know it is a huge MFGG problem that hurts a lot of people, not finishing any games.

And Xgoff, that is a good idea. Only if you really know you can pursue it, and understand how, should you.

Not even in that case, because even if you can do it all will full comprehension, you're still screwing yourself for the workload.

QUOTE (Soiyeruda @ May 3 2008, 03:23 PM)
- Do the programming, sprite collecting, and music collecting AS YOU GO. Getting everything together before you even start to make the game seems to give the illusion that there isn't anything else to do. For example, don't get World 1 and World 2 stuff, Get world 1 stuff, finish world 1, then get world 2 stuff.

Hmm... that's the technique I did -- but mainly in terms of the stage layout itself in my Princess Peach Coin Chase fangame. :P But you're right about that.

For me, my first target is always to finalize the animations of your main characters that you plan to have playable. I'm currently doing that as we speak for this new project I'm working on.

I also agree with Ultramario in terms of switching between projects so that I won't be worn out with one alone.

Since this topic is advice, I need to know opinions before I post an uncertain tip.

I am making games graphics-first, and I never get to gameplay. I have made games gameplay-first, and graphics get neglected. (though I finish more gamess the latter way) So, here is a tip, that may be posted at the top of the topic.

-Evenly divide work between graphics and gameplay; do not do all of one or the other first. If in doubt about graphics, then you can just go gameplay-first.

Well, good advice from everybody. Thanks. Although I don't have problems with most of this, I do tend to bounce around from project to project a lot, and I gather all my resources before I start making my game. And that takes SOOOOO long. Anyway, I won't do that any more. Thanks for the advice! wink.gif
