QUOTE (Giga Gamer @ May 10 2008, 09:50 PM)
Well, good advice from everybody. Thanks. Although I don't have problems with most of this, I do tend to bounce around from project to project a lot, and I gather all my resources before I start making my game. And that takes SOOOOO long. Anyway, I won't do that any more. Thanks for the advice! wink.gif

I did make this topic to help people like me. smile.gif

P.S. I find smilies useful when a message can be misinterpreted as negative when it is positive. (Or vice versa)

I still believe that in order to AT LEAST get started, you need to do the following:

(1) Get the sprite materials of your main playable characters you plan to feature in the game (including finalizing animations for them)
(2) Once Step 1 is done, then deal with finalizing the engine for the game.

The rest is easy; just make sure to allow time to deal with the Events List for each level. Especially when you're adding enemy sprites and the like.

my idea is, whenever you get bored with a project, add a new feature, o powerup or something to add so that you never run out of things to work with

I've only finished two Mario-themed minigames. One of them is on the main site, and the other I plan to add stuff to and fix up before I submit it.

uh "teams" basically increase the chance of a game being canned, since most teams only have one person doing each "piece" of the game

basically instead of 1 chance to lose interest now you have X chances to lose it, since the loss of any person pretty much bombs the game (and this doesn't even take into account conflicts between team members)

I am dedicated.
But I have no skill at all so if I make a game, it's crap and I'll just not feel like getting it done. I need to practice. :P

Making and finishing games are part of an evolutionary process. You start out with something small and it gradually becomes more elaborate and complex overtime through experience. Commitment and dedication have proven to be the primary forces in natural selection for most projects, and the ones with the most dedication are able to survive and adapt to the changing environment.

Hence why I say that the greatest enemy to ANY game production process is time -- both official and fan made. The games that are made in most cases are usually not done in a week -- or even a month.

I've never truly finished a game. The only game that I've almost finished was a Megaman fangame.

After a while, my sentiments have changed about finishing fangames. Read on if you wish to see what I mean.

The only person I am sure this applies to is myself, but I want to know whether this does to others. All the games I have finished, with one or two short exceptions, were made for somebody. They were shown to someone I knew and made for that person. Dedicating a game to a person makes it so much harder to quit that game, and usually it is the only way one of my games survives.

Does this apply to any of you? Are there other special conditions which make it far easier to finish a fangames? Because I have discovered that the usual "tips," while perfect on paper, do not seem to work, at least for me. (if they work well for you, it is a whole different story) I know one working method; having two fangames at once.

I realize now that the tips do not seem to work half as well as I thought, for me and some others. What I am looking for now are tried and true tips that you have personally used and worked well with more than once.

In other words, you have a sense of motivation that urges you to finish those games.

I think that as long as your motivation isn't only to become famed or whatever through the creation of a game, then you'll be able to finish it.

Like when I have to do games for homework assignments. As boring as it gets, I push myself in order to receive a good grade.
