Half-Life Story, possibly spoilers ahead

I am amazed how this haven't been discussed yet.

I recently started playing Half-Life because I wanted to get into the story, and after 11 hours of gameplay I finally beat it. I am currently half-way through HL2 but I'm getting the story pretty well.

Black Mesa tries to invent a teleport for transportation, but accidentally open up a portal to Xen. After Black Mesa is nuked, the portal storms starts and headcrabs, combines and all those spawn everywhere. Earth surrenders. Dr. Breen from Black Mesa is made "president" of Earth (well, he's the guy that informs the citizens of the combine idealouges) and everyone is being escorted to larger cities.

One thing that really got me is how Portal is related to Half-Life, considering a GLaDOS unit is on the Borealis, a ship that has disappeared off the surface of the earth, appearently belonging to Aperture Science.
Aperture Science is appearently the competor of Black Mesa in teleportation, and the GLaDOS unit on the Borealis is supposed to be a much better teleportation device, comparing to what Black Mesa has invented, which is why the Combine wants to get it.

Now recently I've discovered something shocking. Appearently, in Left 4 Dead, Dr. Breen can be found on a newspaper. I have yet to find this in the game myself, but it has been confirmed with screenshots over at the Left 4 Dead Steam forums. I've been giving alot of thought into this, and my guess is that, since there's no combines or headcrabs in Left 4 Dead, I can assume it takes place either before or after the portal storms. That also means that the Left 4 Dead city (which's name is unknown) also exists in the Half Life universe. I guess when I'll be playing Episode 3, I'll be looking for the Mercy hospital!
or maybe the newspaper is a joke?

Anyways, your opinion on how to connect these games, and probably some info I missed would be appriciated

Haven't played it, but I like the sound of evacuations/apocalyptic hell on earth sort of idea. Why do you call them headcraps btw?

I don't think that the zombies in l4d is before Half-Life. I don't think the scientists are that dumb, cuz in HL you can hear that they know the risks with the Xen portal. And in l4d the earth has been taked over by zombies.

I imagine the l4d breen thing is just a cameo.

Much like the TF2 cereal box.

I think Left 4 Dead just happens in an alternate universe, because those zombies aren't Para-Zombies they're Chemo-Zombies.

Yeah that's what I was assuming, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they appeared to be linked in some way.

I remember reading something about how the Xen were probably running from the Combine in HL1 after escaping slavery of some sort. Like evidence being what the last boss looked like with his body messed up kind of like the Stalkers in HL2.

Yeah that was pretty much the impression I was under. When I first played Half-Life 2 and found out the Vantigues were cool with me and sometimes healed me I was all "oh cool". Then I played Half-Life and I saw them and was all "oh a friend" and then they killed me

Actually, it's something like, the Vortigants were enslaved by the Nihilanth. who is believe to have been enslaved by the Combine.

But, Valve leaves a lot of their story up to interpretation and outside of the main game play. :S

Man, that universe must really suck. Zombie apocalypse, and then a wihle later, alien takeover and another zombie apocalypse.

The right man in the wrong place can make all the dif---ference.

I don't see a connection, the Left 4 Dead is a sort of nod to all of the old grindhouse zombie movies, its not serious like Half Life or Portal. Just like you would never, in any way, expect the TF2 universe to somehow merge with the Half Life one.

But what I'd love to discuss is how Portal 2 and Episode 3 and Portal 1 willl all come together. Here's the breakdown: (not like you guys don't know)

Portal - Half Life: Portal is about Black Mesa's main competitor, Aperture Science. If you look into some of the rooms in the 19th stage in Portal, you'll see charts showing how Black Mesa's sales were WAY above Aperture's (maybe because all they made was a portal gun and shower curtains) but then Black Mesa's sales drop to 0 while Aperture shoots up. This is because of the Black Mesa incident, but why would Aperture dedicate an entire meeting to these records? My idea is that they somehow had a hand in the Black Mesa incident, perhaps sabotaging the device.

Portal 2: Not much is known about Portal 2, except that in place of glados we will have good old Cave Johnson (who looks a bit like Reagen), the deceased head of aperture science who has had his consciousness poured into a computer. I assume this game will show more background story about Aperture Science.

Also, this leaked quote from Cave somehow came off as a bit creepy to me, seem that way to anyone else?
"I been thinkin. Heck, suspended as I am in this inky purgatorium, I got nothin’ to do but think. What if them engineers didn’t do me no favors pourin’ me into a computer? What if they denied me my final reward? Lemme tell ya about a fella. Lived thousands a years ago. Didn’t want nothin’ but fer folks to be a little bit nicer to each other. And in the end, he sacrificed himself to save us all. You know who I’m talking about: Hercules.

The man battled minotaurs! Medusas! Hell, he put the gods themselves in an arm bar. And for overcomin’ all them trials? He got to go to Olympus. Damn it! I battled my monsters! Where’s my Olympus? Unless… I haven’t killed all my monsters… Anyway, this next test. Whoo… Yeah… Good luck with that…”
