Super Mario Legacy

Super Mario Legacy is a 3D Mario fangame written in Blitz3D. You might recall my previous topics about this game; since then, I've completely rewritten the engine again to be more efficient, and the gameplay is now more in the style of the 2D Mario games, rather than SM64 (though still in a 3D envionment). The current features include:

- Basic movement engine
- Small Mario, Big Mario, Fire Mario
- Goombas, Koopas w/ kickable shells, Piranha Plants
- Working pipes
- Breakable bricks, ? Blocks, and coins
- P Switches
- Collectable Star Badges (kind of like Star Coins in NSMB; there are 3 in every level)

Comments and criticism are welcome, as always. Note that the FPS number is not fully accurate; the framerate is limited to 60FPS, but the number might be higher (this reflects the 'real' FPS).

This is good. Needs a few fixes at places, but generally, it's really good!


Also I like my 600 fps

looks good.

I only suggest that you somehow smooth the edges of the PM sprite. looks a bit jagged.

Yeah, that's intentional; I made it so that objects that obstruct Mario from the camera become transparent so that you can still see him.

Also, the only reason I haven't added the moving forward animations is because I can't even find them; Techokami's rip is pretty disorganized.

Even though it is intentional, it is very confusing, and I think you'll be left better without that.

And one of the biggest flaws of this engine (don't get me wrong, it is a good engine) is that I have a hard time hitting enemies because the world isn't 2d. Maybe you should look and play some of the other Paper Mario games to see what they did in order to correct this?

Which is why I disliked the "flip to 3D" gimmick in SPM. I think the 2d aspect is fine, but in 3D I have to rely almost purely on Mario's shadows to kill enemies. Also when walking back, the camera makes it hard to see what's coming.(Maybe flip the camera when going in the other direction.)

Well it is hard to have a fast-moving 3d game where you have to stomp enemies because if everyone moves fast it can be quiet the mess of an attemp. I think if he slowed everyone's speed down to like 50% then it wouldn't be that hard.

it's a bit annoying to go backward into the screen, since you can't see what is in front of Mario.
What's even more annoying is to go that way BACK, because then you can't see stuff at all.
How about you make the player be able to rotate the camera?

What also needs fixing is that fireballs always rotate in the same direction, no matter if you shoot them to the left or to the right.
Talking about Rotation, why does Mario do a backflip when he triplejumps?

Oh and what's with those controls???
Space = Jump, Shift = Shoot, Ctrl = Go down pipes
There are better ways to lay this out.

Other than that, it's quite cool. Runs nicely and is fun.

IMO, it isn't that hard to hit enemies in the game, and if I slow all the enemies' speed down to 50%, then it becomes way too slow. Would increasing the radius where a collision is detected between Mario and the enemy help?

Fixed the animation bugs. Also, I made the Alt key turn the camera 180 degrees (this will be in the next demo I release), so you can see behind you. Unless you meant full control with the WASD keys, which would be a bit harder to do.

I liked that scheme because all the buttons were fairly close to each other. I can't use the down button for pipes, for obvious reasons. If you have a better control scheme in mind, I would be glad to implement it.

Nifty

Though it's a bit awkward playing a 3D-like game when Mario's a 2D sprite. It's a bit difficult to judge where things are sometimes.

But nevertheless this sure beats Hello clones.

Look at the original Paper Mario - everyone moves half the speed this game does. I think you could improve by trying that out.

hey this is pretty fun, i don't think i could ever make anything like it in game maker, and you even used blitz, thats really cool, keep up the good work..

but, the shadows need some work, can you make them more like:
