okay let me explain
when i tried compiling the map it said that there were too many brushes. These are solid geometry that makes up the world. These things should only be the bounding boxes (buildings, ground, sky) that separate the world from the pitch black space. Everything else, everything that isn't a cube or is sloped or jagged or sharp or tiny should be made into a "detail." This ensures that the map compiles quicker, and the map loads faster.
What did the original mapper do? Leave all that **** as solid geometry. Hammer goes HUURRRR and melts down. In fact he actually made enough of those tiny things into "details" so that he could compile it the first time, somehow. It's possible the "max brushes" limit was set higher when the map was originally made. But the pattern at which he did it doesn't make any sense at all. Like he just got lazy.
And all I wanted to do was decompile the map, add "nodes" (which makes NPC AI work correctly) and then compile it again for some server. FFS.
