Adding online features to my game, just taking a survey on internet speed so I can transfer data without lagging half the people.

I know for a fact that my network card is a 108mbps Duo-G card.

Windows takes the main channel and always has 56mbps, while the NETGEAR software takes the other channel and goes at an average of 40mbps.

So that's about a 96mbps connection speed.

The test told me a 3mbps (2914kbps) download and a 675kbps upload speed, however. I think that just having people give you their connection speed would be more accurate, since I'm assuming you're going to do Player-Player transfer as opposed to MMO.

Does it really matter? You should always go with the method that sends the least packets, and no matter how you do it, it'll not depend on anyone's network speed at all because packets are really small. It only really matters when you're downloading loads of megabytes, which I hope you are not in a game, during runtime? If so, then it's badly programmed.

Yeah, I have to agree with Mecha on this one. You should just find out how many packets you send and make a minimum requirement.

The one with the least packets would be sending player speed on every change, checking for changes every step, and sending and checking player position every second or so.

512 kbps to be exact. TIP: For those who have it, upgrade. Torrents + 0.5mbps network = disaster. Sad that my computer can't handle more than 8mbps sad.gif .

since I'm assuming you're going to do Player-Player transfer as opposed to MMO.

Actually, what I was planning to do is send data per step, and receive it too. Since this data is a solid 1kb, and the room speed increases with time, it will be sending about 10MB per second, then receiving 10MB per second at the higher levels. Which will lag, terribly.

So then I decided to send the 1-2kb of data per x steps, rather than per step.
What I'd like to know is how fast does most of MFGG's userbase operates at, which will prevent heavy lag if I set the frequency too fast.

Actually **** all this, I'll take Mecha's advice.

Dang. I picked 4-8megabitspersecond but I had a VPN client running during that test. So after deactivating the VPN, I got to over 10mb/s.

So yeah, I have the fastest connection on MFGG.

Dead reckoning is also recommended in GM's help file.

I think that's in GM7, because there's nothing related to DR in GM6's help fule.

I'm not gonna go give a huge lecture on it, because it depends an awful lot on how you did the game engine.

The idea is simple: send the player speed, direction and position, then using these values, assume where he's heading, and then only send the next package when these values differ.

and whoa, you mad?
