Hey, I'm working on a game, and I have a question.

How long do I ahve to be on this board so I can ask someone to make sprites for a fan-game I'm working on? And how should I re-pay them?

I know it might be locked, or stupid, but I'll need someone to help me later, when I get some artwork done....

Please and thanks for the help.

Note to self, got to find a spriter for my fan-game.......

Definitely not a stupid question, and I'll gladly answer it.

Getting someone to sprite for you takes hard work. The spriter needs to be ensured that your fangame will be sucessful, or his efford has gone to waste. There's only a few ways he can be asured of this, and that is if you have created amazing games in the past. Not only that, but your current game has to look like it has potential.

If you have made amazing games in the past, the spriter will know what kind of programmer you are, and how amazing your upcoming games will be. And don't get it the wrong way, everyone wants to sprite for games, but nobody wants to sprite for a failed game.

Hope that cleared it up. It's not a matter of how long you've been here, however it does help on your trustworthiness, so that the spriter is ensured that you won't leave the next day, unnoticed.

I like your spirit, Farmboy.

Like MechaBowser said, it all depends on trustworthyness and potential.
If you are a good contributor or can at least present something solid, people might want to help you with your projects.
Unfortunately I don't know any 100% working instructions for you to achieve this.

Unless I have reason to think you're untrustworthy (when requesting), I will not lock your topics. This again directly connects with your reputation on the forum, which can be improved by contributing (e.g. by showing your work).

The usual repayment for sprite work would be to give credit in your game and to finish your game.

Yes, reputation sure helps around here. I'm eager to see some of your games.

At Mecha and Guiena. So what you're saying is that the longer I stay, and contribute, the more trust I'll build.

Also I'm going to be new to the game making business. So I can;t be perfect, however, some friends and I made great ideas for our fan-game.

Okay, thanks for the help smile.gif. And I should also try to make some little tiny games so i can work on my game skills, thanks.

Only thing I got is Game Maker 7.0 Lite

ANSWERS!

1.) Game engines are basic sets of code that you can build on to create a bigger and more full game. An example of this would be an open source file of a simple room in which you can make a character run a jump, this isn't a full game, but since its open source, its an engine and it allows people to build on it if they don't have the knowledge needed to make the basic platform engine.

2.) You DO NOT need one and I recommend you don't use one, there is a bias against them because using an engine severely limits your creativity. I DO however suggest you go check out Ultramario or Hello's engines and look through the code to use them as a learning tool.

3.) Just google or search on the MFGG mainsite "Ultramario Engine" or "Hello Engine"

I also suggest you start using GML instead of D&D in gamemaker, because you're going to make the transition eventually and it'll be less painful if you just start in GML.

Others and myself won't mind if you make a few engine games just to get the hang of it, but as I said, don't use engines for too many games because they all end up being boring and repetitive.

Thanks and good luck at MFGG (people who know me and my attitude towards new members will be able to tell that I actually think you'll turn out to be a good member here by the fact that I'm not insulting you and helping you.)

In order

1) A game engine, is basically the game made for you
As in 100% percent of the programing is done for you

2) Nope, as a matter of fact many people around here would LOVE if you not use one

3) The Main site has very many of them under How-To's

I hope this helps, and I can't wait to see your work

You can also try to learn spriting yourself, because as MechaBowser said it will take time for you to build up your trustworthyness, especially when you're new to game making.

You can also study engines to see how you can make something similar yourself.
And you got the right attitude, it will help you a lot around here.

To refer yet again to the first post, I would probably reccommend that you do not request spriters to help you, but rather let them get to you.

This is a good strategy.

Make a game engine first, then say "unfortunately I can't make good sprites, so it will take a while until this game is finished" and there you go. wink.gif
