Why must you taunt me MGS!?, Can't get passed "Press Start" screen

So, I got the MGS collection for my PS2 and a PS1 memory card (so that I can save in MGS1). I went to play the game, watched the entertaining opening sequence and after that, for some reason, I can't get passed the Press Start screen. Don't tell me I need a PS1 controller now too or something. I'll rage if I do.

Are you sure the controller is plugged in?

Yes, because I restarted my system and moved around the PS2 menu to see if my controller was working. I'm going to try another controller anyway.

I even tried a PS1 controller. It doesn't work either. WTF!?

Three different controllers didn't work. I restarted the system a few times with each. I am pissed.

Blow in the socket and press all of the buttons.

The controllers are working fine for other games. It's just this one that's being a *****.

HAHA got it to work! Had to restart it a few times.

Ok what the hell. I can't save now. It told me I had to format my PSX memory card, so I did and now it's saying error.

I restarted it and now the controller issues are back. What the hell? Would I be fine if I just play the second one now and then get the GameCube remake later? I don't need to play them in order do I?

As far as playing the game goes, I suppose not (stuff like 1st person aim and different positions for the sniper rifle make things a bit easier in 2), but you might be a bit lost/spoiler'd as far as story goes.

You could even start with the 3rd considering it's the first game chronologically.

Well saying I can start with the third means that there's no way that it'll spoil the other games for me, right?

Well...perhaps not as much as if you were starting with 2 (there's an option to read an entire NOVEL that recaps the events of the first game), though there's recurrences, references to future events, and in-jokes you really might not get unless you've played the other two first.

Also, the elements added and subtracted from game play might make it a bit difficult if you didn't have the first two games to get used to everything.

No but you might find certain things not to make sense.

Just play them in order since it's probably the best way to do it.

My step bother is giving me his PS2 so, I might be able to play it on that. The problem with the one my other brother gave me is that it's one of those slim PS2s and I hear those have all kinds of problems.

Hopefully, this'll work when I get the original fat PS2.
