Yes, we're just as shocked and horrified to hear the news as you are, but it seems to be true. Pioneer, the last major electronics manufacturer to continue production of laserdisc players, has announced they'll discontinue all three of the models they currently offer, leaving dozens of hardcore fans in the dust

Even more details here

Anyways, First the VHS. Now the Laserdisk. Thats two of the last remaining great video formats to bite the dust within two months.

The only other of the last great video formats I can think of now thats left is the CD. And even with Digital music download. It seems to not be slowing down it's sales much at all. And even if they stop putting music on CD. The CD still has a market for being used in computer applications.

But still, at this rate you have to wonder.......

I've never had a laserdisc, that seems it would be a really neat novelty to have.

With something that big, I might as well pull out the 25+ 5.5 inch floppy disks I have.

I'm surprised they've been making them this long to begin with.

CD / DVD still have enormous staying power.

I await the death of the VCD.

It will be soon, I just know it, why? My blu-ray player cannot play VCD's ;_;

Laser disc was still alive? I thought it died way before DVD became mainstream.

ffff the last time i've watched a laserdisc, much less seen one, i was in like 1st grade

but oh well they were going to die anyway; 12" diameter and really horrible capacity (similar to CDs iirc), plus they're analog which doesn't fly that well with studios since DRM isn't an option

My cousin has a laser disk player, I remember him having a small collection of movies on it. Yeah they are roughtly the size of records, huge. I had no idea it was still considered 'alive'

There's not really a market for laser disk players
