this is really frustrating to look at imo, it could probably use a bit of fixing, graphically. Maybe not make the hud elements background point in a specific direction, as it disturbs the players attention, which it should definitely not.

That's a possibility, but has it ever been done in today's game making applications (TGF, MMF, GM)?

It's easy to do in them, but in Mario platformers you generally need to see most of your information most of the time.
