QUOTE (Soiyeruda @ Jan 31 2009, 07:02 AM)
It's not so much the fact he is using a pre-made engine (though it disappoints me somewhat), but more that he doesn't seem to put effort into game creation.

If you read through the posts, you'll find out that he has stated many times, "I cannot program because"
- It's boring
- It's hard
- I'm too lazy
- Using placeholder sprites makes the story feel weird
- (Insert more excuses)

He has just provided a bunch of excuses, really.

He says that he has tried for months and had little or no results in his ability. There are a few possibilities why:

1) He can't program. Period. He has provided many reasons as to why he can't, ranging from the fact that he claims it is too difficult, to the fact that he can't be bothered to remember many different types of codes and their function.
2) His method of trying to learn might be odd. He hasn't even grasped D&D very well. There is a possibility he didn't use tutorials. Just tried to get into it head on.
3) He doesn't truly want to do game programming. (he has resorted to a premade free program intended to create adventure games. Looks very limited, IMO). He has stated that he'd rather create graphics for video games, which is somewhat ironic, because the purpose of this topic is that he is REQUESTING for a graphic-desginer.

I'm sure there are more, but unless he gives a reason, these are just my theories, and I'm leaning towards option #3 somewhat.

If you need to request a team, then you should at least be able to hold your own weight. So far, his attitude towards game programming will not fetch him very many graphic artists.

How I see it is that unless it's a REALLY big project, it should hurt to create your own engine from scratch. Most of us on the fangame scene would be REALLY annoyed if someone comes in and requests "Hey, can you create an engine for me?"

I know I would be - because I'm currently working on the "engine portion" of one of my newest fangame projects still under lock and key -- and it's no fun because of SO MANY TESTS I have to go through to make sure it's going right.

And if I'm not mistaken, creating an engine for a fangame project takes WEEKS at least to get right.

Finally learning how to program in Visual Basic.

Won't need an engine. I think I'm going to cancel the project

Stop learning

Visual Basic is awful and it will only hurt you later on.

Yeah, basically learn to sprite or program, one or the other.

It looks as though you're learning to program so you're getting soemwhere.

All those program languages look really hard, though

I don't think i could manage

VB is really easy for me to understand since the beginning.

and all this doesn't look easy whatsoever

You have to actually practice and try to learn. You're not going to create some
500$ program or make a SMB3 clone the first time you do something.

I've tried many a-time...

It just never works out...

I'm not expecting to make that kind of program in an instant...

I'm not really sure, but I know it teaches bad habits in other languages and is generally not accepted by many programmers. The code might be bloated or something maybe. Ask a programmer.

It teaches habits that are discouraged in almost EVERY other Programming Languages, so it's harder to go into "Professional Development" using Languages like ASM, C, and C++.

I was just explaining to him why using VB is discouraged, like he asked.

EDIT: And looking back, it looks like this was a bumped thread. I remember warning him to stop using VB if he wants to do Professional Programming a while back.

EDIT: Actually, it was 32 Days ago. XD

For GML did you look at the help file/manual that came with Gamemaker? That's very helpful and its what I used to learn most of GML. You can also go to the GMC and 64digits and look at some examples there for Gamemaker. Also theres a webpage lying around some where that has GML code for DnD functions. Try google.
