IMO, Japan doesn't really care if some of their characters have eccentric appearances/personalities (or are truly gay, for that matter). Also, there are far better cases of "drag-queenism" in video games to begin with. In Paper Mario: TTYD for example, Vivian is actually a boy in the Japanese person who is constantly mistaken for a girl, apparently. I can't believe how often what's in a manual is taken as canon over what's in the actual games. (Nowhere in one of the official Mario games is Birdo indicated to be a guy, but Birdo has a clearly female voice in SMA.)
