So I'm making this game with the intensions to be as original as possible but still keep the Mario feeling, so the first thing I looked at was the engine.
The engines of today’s Mario fangames are often (not always) trying to be as close to the original games (SMW, SMB3 etc) as they can and it's nothing wrong with that except that this levees not so much place for originality especially if you use a almost pre-made game (HME or UME).
The engine I'm using is not like the games of old, The Mario physics was made to be fun to play with not to be as close to the real deal.
Then I looked at the overworld, when I play some of the fangames here most of the time the games are very linear (as most platformers are) but I don't think that’s the optimal solution, my game uses a HUB world similar to Mario 64 and you can play the levels in any order you like as long as it's a part of the the current world, but you have to beat all the levels in a world to get to the boss level and after that to a new world.
Sometimes when I can't beat a level in a couple of tries, I tire of it and stops playing, in this game when you can't beat a level you can just play another instead.
The graphics are from SPP and I'm using Phages tilesheet, the music I'm using are only quality .MP3s with some really awesome remixes thrown in.
The Plot is quite simple, Peach has been kidnapped once again and Mario is on his way to Bowsers castle, when he arrives the top part of the castle flies up in the sky on a dark cloud, Bowser is using the dark powers of the Ztars (From MP4) to make this happen, Mario now has to use the remain castle (yes, it's the HUB world) to go to the different spots where Bowser hid the Ztars, but the portals to these levels are impossible to enter because of the evil power that surrounds the Ztar, the only way to enter the level is to collect normal Stars and counter the effect of the Ztar.
Well enough about that for now, here is some screenies (keep in mind that the game is not complete so it may look a little empty, the number in the left corner is just the frames per second and will not be in the game).

The HUB.

A level from the first world: Grassy Green Plains.
Ideas are much appreciated.
UPDATE 1:
To quote Guinea: the "Bros" in the title has some significance to it.

Yup Luigi is playable through the whole game and he is faster and jumpier than his brother, but harder to control. You switch characters with the green/red pipe (suprise ehh), the stuff over the black door are an effect that is present when you can't enter the boss level, it looks cooler in motion.
The boss levels are kinda special compered to the other levels, the dark powers of the Ztars have corrupted the land and all thats left is an dull lifeless world filled with enemies and no power-ups as far as the eye can see.

Stay tuned, in the next update there will be a DEMO!
