So I'm making this game with the intensions to be as original as possible but still keep the Mario feeling, so the first thing I looked at was the engine.
The engines of today’s Mario fangames are often (not always) trying to be as close to the original games (SMW, SMB3 etc) as they can and it's nothing wrong with that except that this levees not so much place for originality especially if you use a almost pre-made game (HME or UME).
The engine I'm using is not like the games of old, The Mario physics was made to be fun to play with not to be as close to the real deal.

Then I looked at the overworld, when I play some of the fangames here most of the time the games are very linear (as most platformers are) but I don't think that’s the optimal solution, my game uses a HUB world similar to Mario 64 and you can play the levels in any order you like as long as it's a part of the the current world, but you have to beat all the levels in a world to get to the boss level and after that to a new world.
Sometimes when I can't beat a level in a couple of tries, I tire of it and stops playing, in this game when you can't beat a level you can just play another instead.

The graphics are from SPP and I'm using Phages tilesheet, the music I'm using are only quality .MP3s with some really awesome remixes thrown in.

The Plot is quite simple, Peach has been kidnapped once again and Mario is on his way to Bowsers castle, when he arrives the top part of the castle flies up in the sky on a dark cloud, Bowser is using the dark powers of the Ztars (From MP4) to make this happen, Mario now has to use the remain castle (yes, it's the HUB world) to go to the different spots where Bowser hid the Ztars, but the portals to these levels are impossible to enter because of the evil power that surrounds the Ztar, the only way to enter the level is to collect normal Stars and counter the effect of the Ztar.

Well enough about that for now, here is some screenies (keep in mind that the game is not complete so it may look a little empty, the number in the left corner is just the frames per second and will not be in the game).

The HUB.

A level from the first world: Grassy Green Plains.

Ideas are much appreciated.

UPDATE 1:

To quote Guinea: the "Bros" in the title has some significance to it.
user posted image
Yup Luigi is playable through the whole game and he is faster and jumpier than his brother, but harder to control. You switch characters with the green/red pipe (suprise ehh), the stuff over the black door are an effect that is present when you can't enter the boss level, it looks cooler in motion.

The boss levels are kinda special compered to the other levels, the dark powers of the Ztars have corrupted the land and all thats left is an dull lifeless world filled with enemies and no power-ups as far as the eye can see.

Stay tuned, in the next update there will be a DEMO!

There have been other Super Mario 64 Platformers created before, but your story is mostly original, so I'm interested in the final outcome of this.

It's nice to know that someone else isn't trying to make a fangame that's essentially suppose to be a remake or whatever.

Maybe you already intended this, but maybe find a font that'll fit in with everything else, as it's out of style at the moment.

Let's work hard to create new original ideas for fangames and turn them into reality.

This is't a SM64 game it's just using some elements from it, as I said I want to make something orginal.

About the font, I'm awere that it dosen't fit very well, but I had other stuff to fix with higher priority, bit I'll fix that as fast as possible.

Thanks for the nice comment.

Hey, that has the same name as my Mario games!
Super Mario 07, Mario 08, now yours!
That's okay though, two games can have the same name right?

This is tempting me to give MKE a Hub world...
Sadly, it's already been done.

Yeah, this looks great! Original story, too! Sadly, I can't give advice until there is a demo.

When you remake it in C++, make a hub world.

Well it's time for a Demo.
A small one with one level in it, but I hope you can give me some feedback anyway.

EDIT: Damm, it doesn't work, so much for giving mediafire a chance.

EDIT2: And it's up again.

I really like that demo! Good physics! The level design needs improvement though.

I need a level designer.

The game looks nice soo far, and playes well enough.

I did find some things tho.
You probably allready know, but the climbing animation does NOT fit at all. One thing is that it looks like you're walking when climbing up, but when climbing down it looks like you're walking forward.(Reverse the animation at least?)
Turning in mid-air is a bit too fast, it's hard to hit stuff, especially moving stuff, while in air(You press right and you suddenly fly past what you're trying to hit), maybe give a bit less sudden acceleration on the ground too?

And other than the fact that swimming didn't seem to work, it looks like you've come a long way with the game and engine soo far =)
I especially liked how the mushroom jumped out of the ?-block wink.gif
Also... the brown blocks looks like pieces of chocolate. :P

Good luck on the rest =)

Thank you.

1.I'm aware of the climbing sprite, I'm not a very good spriter but I may try to do something better sometime.

2.Hmm, this may be tricky one, but I will see what I can do.

3.Yeah, I got lazy with the swiming, I will fix that too.

Aw, it's a .rar. I can't open them.
I tried WinRAR or something(there's a bunch with similar names) and it was kind of annoying. Everything I downloaded needed to be decompressed by it, even zips.
