8 follows the story of a dragon, pursued by demons, through a system of 8 caverns, connected by short passageways guarded by The Gatekeeper. He must fight, solve and help his way through them to gain the leader's trust to proceed to the next cavern. Throughout his quest, the caverns grow darker and deadlier as the demons take hold of them, culminating in a full on battle between the dragon and the demon master.

IMO enemies should not be solid, because if you collide with an enemy you're ****ed.

Okay let me evaluate this baby!!

Graphics 8/10
Very good, reminds me a lot of Cave Story. I like it so far.

Gameplay 6/10
Not so hot here. The fact that the view is so fixed and the played can only jump so high (which in this case is TOO high, variable jumping could fix this) makes me feel a bit encased, which, even if you were going for that feeling, is just too distressing in an exploration game. The enemy/boss AI also seemed a bit erratic, and the boss's hitflash is too long.

Now on the other hand, the gameplay shows little glitches and is otherwise pretty solid. It seems well programmed so far!

Overall 7/10
The game gots some serious potential. Keep workin' at it; and make sure you fix the stuff I told you about. Good job!

Yeah, you get easily stuck in enemies, then randomly pushed away from them. The keys could be better organized because the moment that boss approached me I had no idea what was jumping and what was shooting and ended up pressing run.

You obviously jump too high, and move too slow at standard speed. Its not that hot to keep pressing ctrl (or was it z) to keep the speed up.

The cutscenes needs better transitions. I find myself unclear about what just happened because the screens change so drastically.

The first boss has the invincibility fade that only the player should have. Is there anything bad in not allowing me to keep shooting the enemy? To counter this, you could just increase his health. It slows the game down dramatically with the invincibility fade on bosses, and it doesn't really have any use.

The game could definitely need some sound effects, too.

The sprites are really amazing though, and as Tri mentioned, most likely inspired by Cave Story. It has its charm, and it makes it look wonderful. Good job!

Some graphics seem to be in conflicting styles but this is a pretty neat game.

Thanks for telling me this, I'll start fixing some of that now.

Although, I can't add any audio yet, since I can't make anything that wouldn't make it worse.


Also, Fuzzy, please tell me which sprites conflict. If it's the characters and enemies, they're meant to stand out, and have their own style.

I have no code set to collide with enemies, and they're not solid, yet you still stick to them...

K, I fixed most of those.

Running is now your normal speed, you hold Ctrl to walk (stops you going off ledges if you don't start too close.

I added a couple of things too.

Unfortunately, after adding your suggestions, The Gatekeeper is now easy to beat, as in, stand still and shoot fireballs, whilst dodging the occasional attack.

Still no audio, since I suck at making music.

Updating soon.

See, the dragon fits the background perfectly, but the gatekeeper needs a lot of work, I can tell you are trying to give him an eerie feel but making him morph with the background may not be the best option.

Block form is meant to blend.

Finished the demo, updating before I leave for a week, I'll check all the replies after then for suggestions etc.

Still no music, since I suck, and no variable jumping, since I've no idea how to do that.
