http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2009/jan...n-syrup-mercury

I searched for this and didn't see it here, and although this is like a week old I think it's pretty important news to get around considering how much HFCS you probably consume!

edit: I'm also aware that most of you won't read the link, so I suggest you do so as I'm not going to quote the whole article for you!

wait so they mix their ingredients in vats filled with mercury

well, they can't just remove every single mercury atom from their final product every single time, it doesn't work that way

I'm already insane so I don't have to worry! except for the fact that mercury is like one of my biggest fears ever.

"It hasn't hurt me now, so that means it never will!" I hear smokers spout this nonsense all the time, come on now. If mercury is unfit for thermometers, it can't possibly be too good for consumption.

It's only unfit for thermometers because people keep breaking them and don't know how to safely clean up the relatively large quantity of mercury pooling on the floor and evaporating into the air.

Are you denying the dangers of smoking simply because your grandfather hasn't been affected by them?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_(element)#Safety
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_poisoning

This stuff is pretty dangerous. Obviously you're not consuming a large enough amount to get mercury poisoning from just one soda or meal, but I imagine with how common HFCS is, the dangers of mercury in this case become a bit more realistic.

On the other hand, not all HFCS is contaminated, and not all at equally high levels.

9/20 samples contained mercury, that's 45%- if their research wasn't limited. Different measures, of course, but the danger is still there. I don't think I want to take a risk of consuming mercury or not- sounds like some pretty dangerous stuff.

you would need to consume 3,508,771g(if I did this math right) of high fructose corn syrup to get the same amount of mercury that is in an average thermometer

This is no big deal to get worried over. Like Elyk said, you would need to consume a very, very large amount of this stuff to be in danger of mercury poisoning.

I drink soda everyday, and have been for the past couple of years. I'm fine.

yeah except mere exposure to that amount is deadly due to the fact you can breath it in and skin contact isn't that good for you either

if you consumed that much, you'd surely die
