I'm starting back on my old fangame, Super Mario World Adventure.
So, I want 2 know what makes a Fangame more enjoyable, Playable, Exciting, and
most of all, Mario!

user posted image

Heres what I came up with starting with the top thing in a fangame; The Story:

A Story for a fangame can be alot of things to me. I like my story lines 2 be
slick and more Mario based then many. Like a story involving King Boo as
the main villain.
It may take you back in time, or in the present day. Something may have been
stolen, or broken into bits of its original self. Each story must have a solid plot to
it, That's what makes people pat attention more!

Goals
Why are you playing? Too see what happen at the end of course! The Goal of each
fangame should involve an Item or a Person. Usually, Goals are at the end of each
stage, level, or setup, But too be more specific, In an Adventure setting, Its always
at the END of the game.

Collectibles
Mario is always picking up weird objects or Items in his adventures, So what should he
be collecting this time? Maybe Power Stars? Glowing Cristals? Maybe Even Masks?
He collects them for what? From where? Lets look and see:

-Too beat the game
-Too reach a level
-Too collect it and make a whole new Item.

Many Items can be collected, such as: Heath Items, Menu Items, Weapon Items,
Equip Items, And other Items like a Map, or a Letter. You can find them anywhere,
a House, in a Bush, or in plain site! So many possibilities! You decide. wink.gif

Characters
Many colorful and active characters. May they be friendly, helpful, or just plain creepy. Some may give hints to you're next Goal, An special Item, or a person
you might need to talk to. Characters can be in a clear setting, or a public setting.
Here are some Character ideas:

-Toads
-Koopas
-Goombas
-Normal people
-Bomb-Ombs
-Yoshis

Some Characters are idle constantly, Some just stand there. Some may be selling
items(like a traveler), some may be selling info. Characters are a BIG part in a Mario fangame to
make it more active.

Places
Where should Mario go? Where is he now? Why is he here? Whats here?
Ice cold, Red hot, Hard as stone. There are Towns, Jungles, Islands, Meadows, and
lots and lots of Water. Signs may be sticking up from the ground, Birds might be flying high in the sky, and Enemies are roaming the place! Make it active, more
colorful(depending on the setting you prefer). Heres some suggestions:

-Water falls
-River and Bridges
-Flowers, Trees, And Bushes
-Animated background
-Moving clouds

Don't make it look boring, make it look like its a moving work of art! Be
creative, try new things and see how it turns out!

Mario's Move
A fangame just wouldn't be Mario without his fancy jumping! Mario has a whole
garage shad full of tricks. His moves may be learned, or already there.
Some may get him across a wide hole, or a spike trap. All of witch serve
a common purpose. Some of the most common Mario skills are:

-Basic Jump
-Skidding
-Down hill sliding
-Triple Jump
-Ground Pound
-Back Flick
-Dashing
-Long Jump

Yea, I know, That's a lot of moves too pull off. But, With the right attitude and
determination, anything is possible!

Any more suggestions for what a Mario fangame should include?
Post it here or PM me! I'd like too know!

What I find more enjoyable in games, are smooth, from scratch sprites, fitting sound effects, and upbeat music.

Oh and innovative bosses.

What makes a Mario fangame more Mario? Honestly, I don't care, as long as some Mario character is involved.

Some of my suggestions though:

- If you're are doing the "worlds" thing, then try coming up with new worlds. Meadows, Forests, and Deserts are frequently used, and it gets somewhat annoying, unless they're special in some way.
- Make original bosses. No more Goomboss and Giant Pirahna and crap. Gets old.
- It sounds like you're doing an RPG. The Mario stories seem to typically be funny, so try to add humor to your text.

And yeah, I believe this is a FGD, Misc. Discuss thing.

It needs lots of polish and passion to be truly Mario.

This is why I hate everything made in Hello's engine.

I think things that detract from a Mario game are things that you'd never see Mario doing. Like Super World War II Bros driving tanks and shooting bullets at Zombie nazi goombas.

That wouldn't make a game feel like a Mario game to me.

Agreed. And also, original bosses are a must. The Koopalings and giant enemies are getting old.

I dunno. Have 128 Marios in it? That'd make it more Mario, I guess.

On a more serious and less un-funny reference joking note, I just want there to be some sort of innovation, the kind of thing Mario maker Miyamoto is always shouting about.

Which is why I liked Hatman's games, Toodle's games, and Tech Wing's games. They differ from the norm, and always add some interesting elements.

The regular stuff like what Hello churns out on a regular basis is always seeming more and more to be the same game with a new set of paint, but all the same colors; the graphics are always the same.

Not to say some regular old platforming is bad, but I'd like there to be less same-ol' and more innovation.

Falcon Punch is the result of the Sun heating fists. It drives the Blue Falcon. Heating causes destruction of water into the pain, where it then hurts, creating rain. Rain creates flowing water in tears, which can then be converted into other forms through more pain.

All I know is that since all the Mario characters are energetic, the game projects that we do should represent that energy. That's what I had in mind for all the fangame ideas I have planned - but they've got the Mario series' females getting lead role treatment.

The projects are still top secret for now, but the bottom line is that it has to be energetic so that the player can be as well, as well as making sure that it related REALLY well to the Mario series itself.
