Yeah, some of you might know this already because I posted a thread about it in the CCC.
Also this isn't really that fun unless you do an NPC slaughter map or deathmatch.
Look at the bugs list at the bottom, if you don't it'll get pretty annoying when you come across these bugs because they ARE game breaking.
If you don't know what SMOD is,
click here.To play SMOD Multiplayer you need these installed via Steam:
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Episode One
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
Source SDK Base
SMOD 40a (download here, for instructions on installing look down two lines)
NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ALL OF THESE INSTALLED YOU CANNOT PLAY MULTIPLAYER. YOU CAN PLAY SINGLEPLAYER BY HAVING JUST HALF-LIFE 2 INSTALLED, BUT WITHOUT THE EPISODE ONE ADDON THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY TO PLAY THIS ONLINE. TRUST ME, I'VE TRIED.Installation for SMOD 40a:
First thing you need to do is go to
this page. It's a direct link to the SMOD 40 download. What you need to do is find your Steam/steamapps/SourceMods folder. Just extract the smod folder there.
Once you're done with that, you'll need to install the 40a patch. That can be found
here. Install it by doing it the exact same way you did last time.
Yet another thing you'll need is the 40a quickfix. Download link is
here. Install this just like you did with the other ones, by extracting it to your sourcemods folder.
The last thing you'll need are a few files that are necessary to play this online correctly, and there are a few tweaks. Download
here. Install it the same way as the episode one addon. Includes the maps electric onslaught and syn_burlybrawl.
Restart Steam after you do all of this so SMOD appears on your game list. Once Steam is restarted, open up SMOD. When it first loads it will start preloading sound and texture files.
This can take up to 20 minutes depending on your computer specs.Setting up Multiplayer:
Make sure SMOD is closed and Steam is open. Find SMOD on your Steam games list, right-click it, and create a desktop shortcut. Next, go to your desktop and find your SMOD icon. Right-click it and click Properties. To do this right you have to know what you're doing. What you need to do here is click in the line labeled Target and press Home to go to the beginning of the line. You'll see a file directory in quotation marks. Move the text cursor directly after that and type <space> -applaunch 215. Then click OK. (

Now to play Multiplayer you HAVE to open the game through this shortcut. If you don't you will not be able to join or create servers.
SETTING UP A SERVER:
To get this to work you either need your ports forwarded or have a Hamachi network running with people connected to it.
Click create multiplayer and then open the game tab. The only things you need to change here are the name of the server and the maximum number of players allowed on the server. Setting the max players to the exact amount of people you plan on joining is recommended.
When you load the map, type "exec server_config" in the console. If you want to change the map, simply type "changelevel <map name>".
There ya go. Now you can play SMOD online with your friends.
BUGS:- No chat UI
- No scores list
- Player models look really stupid (look up and down to make your friends laugh)
- Certain points on some singleplayer maps cause the game to crash
- Kicking things sometimes causes the game to crash
- There's currently no way to turn off player vs player damage
- Server changes maps after 20 minutes no matter what mp_timelimit is set to
- Players collide with ammo, weapons, and health which is generally annoying
- Multiplayer tab in the Options menu is screwed up (fixes itself after a few days)
- Zooming doesn't work
FIXED BUGS:- Random crash caused by the gore system
- Serverside ragdolls from NPCs cause crashing
- AI being totally unresponsive
- Hopwire causing the server and all clients connected to crash
- Strider Cannon and AR2 energy orbs dissolving player ragdolls causing whoever got dissolved to crash when they try to respawn
- Flamethrower causing all clients connected to the server to crash unless the person running the server used it, then he was the only one that didn't crash
