| QUOTE (Grant @ Feb 23 2009, 02:36 AM) | you sound like you don't really believe in anything
as far as religion OR lack thereof is concerned
and if it's because you haven't yet found any belief system that's convinced you, maybe that's a sign that you ought to keep looking..? |
Just not caring is apparently not an option?

Not a valid one, no.
All belief systems, whether religious or non-religious, include beliefs that certain things are not acceptable, morally/ethically speaking. "Not caring" means dismissing all such "restrictions" characteristic of belief systems.
Now consider whichever belief system actually is right, even if it should have no official name (just the set of all correct ideas, including the correct ideas about what's unacceptable). Someone who "doesn't care" dismisses everything in that belief system, since that person dismisses all belief systems. That means the person doesn't care about the right ideas about what's unacceptable, and therefore will tolerate what should not be tolerated, which is a morally problematic sort of toleration.
(Note: Not replying to any more posts on this subject in this topic, due to it being derailment. If the discussion is continued elsewhere, I probably will reply.)

Yes, according to Grant, but you do know there are actually legit moral/ethical schools of thought revolving around the notion of "to each their own," right? In other words, these ideals say "nothing is inherently wrong, and every person has their own opinion of wrong and to force one's own opinion onto others or expect certain things of others is not allowed." I was under the impression this was more or less the belief system Nnnkingston was driving at.
Also I think there's a difference between not caring and not having a belief system at all. One's morality can be spontaneous and subjective.
