"An inadvertent administrative error" meant that some of the 1,400 Microsoft laid off recently received overpayments in their severance packages. The company's asked for the money back, making this a hat trick of HR Kops komedy.

"We ask that you repay the overpayment and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience to you," says the letter, which spells out what happens if you pay back the dough in or out of the same tax year in which it was received. Reading between the lines, they threaten recipients with a big tax hit if they don't give it back.

Someone posted a copy of the letter on TechCrunch, and CNET went to Microsoft. The company confirmed the letter's authenticity but declined further comment.

Let's see. Fire a bunch of people, check. Screw up their sev package. Check. Go begging for the cash back. Check. See that embarrassing demand posted on the Interwebs. Check. Funny that the ones responsible for this cluster**** are in fact the ones who kept their jobs.

Yeah, the only act of generosity from Microsoft and it was an ACCIDENT. Let's not try turning over that new leaf too quickly now eh?

Take some of Gates' money, jeez, before it decomposes in the bank.

Gates does not work for MS anymore.

And honestly most of these replies are stupid as ****. A payroll error and you start flipping **** about MS being greedy? I'm glad none of you seem interested in business administration or I'd fear for ever getting out of this economic hole.

Let's do a thinking exercise, shall we? Microsoft is doing poorly. Decides to take normal route of corporate restructuring to lessen fiduciary burden. Overpays on severance package(not mandated). What should Microsoft do to continue attempting to remain competitive?

A. Let the employees keep the overpay, further hurting finances
B. Demand the money back, after all they were let go to reduce monetary drain
C. Do whatever the public wants to appease what will essential amount to a consumer group that may not even purchase your products

You simply CAN'T ask for money back. You gave it away, you simply can't ask for it back. It's ludicrous.

Add to that that Microsoft is famous for being greedy. Simply NO.

Fire the ones in charge of the severance package.

You simply CAN in fact ask for it back. Particularly if your company is in dire straits and STILL paying severance. What's outrageous about this is that they have decided not to pursue the money after all. They'll get little in the way of good publicity by dropping it this late in the game.

And I think you mean MS is infamous for being greedy. Welcome to capitalism, kindly bend over if you think overspending on niceties will yield successful companies in this market.

And your last statement is something I could agree with, along with taking a look at the source and amount of the overpay. There's also the matter of looking into the continued employment of the PR guys behind all of this if they can't spin this a little better.
