Just a reminder that this topic isn't "should I buy an Xbox 360 or a new PC?" but rather "what kind of 360 should I buy?"

Normal system is fine mostly, I tend to think of the elite as more of a gimmick to sucker in people for more money.

QUOTE (Captain Jeff Silvers @ Feb 25 2009, 08:57 PM)
Do the older games that aren't compatible out-of-box with the Pro model require specific, individual patches, or is it a simple matter of downloading one patch that increases backward compatibility?

Unfortunately, there isn't one all-purpose patch for all the old games.

However, something I found extremely convenient is that as long as you are connected online, you can just put in the disc and it will immediately download the specific patch. No searching required.

Yeah, get a 360 as a cheaper alternative to decking out your PC.

Buying an Xbox 360 would be a great idea, there are plenty of great games to be played on it.

I'm actually not sure yet. Halo 3, even though I've only briefly played it, seems like a given (and probably the original two). I've heard so much about Gears of War that it's likely a given as well, and I can see myself downloading a lot from Xbox Live Arcade.

Well, if you can afford it then go for it. I see no reason not to, unless you end up never using it, which I highly doubt will happen considering all the great games for it.

And dude, you should also get Nuts and Bolts just for ****s and giggles.

I'm sure I could find out by doing a quick Google search (and in fact probably will immediately after I post this), but how homebrew-able is the 360? I'm talking about downloading homebrew games, not developing. Specifically are there many emulators for the system?

(For a regular 360 that is)

Unless you intend on downloading Xbox Originals I'd suggest getting the normal 360. If you intend on downloading the Xbox Originals, get Psychonaughts.

With the money you save by not getting the Elite you could buy more games, which is what you want the console for to begin with. 20gb hard drive should work since most Xbox Arcade games are fairly small.
