That's similar to how I've been looking at it. Melee was a giant step forward, and a tough act to follow. The Wii hardware limitations don't help either.

Yeah, the Brawl Dojo managed to make things like music that was taken right from a game, instead of being remixed sound great, and because of that people started hyping it beyond that, for the longest time, people were CONVINCED that Sakurai confirmed a 5 character roster, but that's just completely unrealistic.
I do occasionally play Brawl, not much though, but I haven't touched melee in longer.
