I'm sorry, but WHAT? :ugh: I highly doubt that you can make a Bomb out of something like a Tree or Apple.

sar-casm –noun 1. harsh or bitter derision or irony.
2. a sharply ironical taunt; sneering or cutting remark: a review full of sarcasms.

I was making fun of you/him/whoever was assuming stem cells could be made into bombs or whatever you thought.

Listen, Stem Cell research is for developing CURES for DEADLY diseases, NOT creating a BOMB. How on earth do you think this will turn into another Manhattan Project? Unlike the Manhattan Project, Stem Cell Research is for HELPING people, NOT HURTING them.

Seems as though you didn't quite understand what I meant. I really wanted to refrain from posting, but it seems I'm no better than all of you.

I was referring to the effort the State put forth into the Manhattan project, I wasn't comparing the projects themselves. You want to chow on some grade A fetus? Great. Find some investors, better yet...foreign investors. Why not just privatize the whole deal and sell them in cans, make a whole damn franchise and then we'll all be happy as hell.

I hope I'm misunderstanding, but... are you saying that you don't want them to put effort into trying to cure deadly diseases? I'm tired, so I may have misunderstood. Or are you saying that you don't want them to put as much effort into curing diseases as they put into creating the Nuke? I'd rather them cure diseases, so I'd prefer more effort than was put into the Manhattan Project.

I'm going to put this bluntly as I can: I am rich. Goddamn rich. Filthy rich.

Programs like this require money. This money mostly comes out of my commissions. I score an annual contract at the beginning of the year, whoop de do. 5mill each month, good for me, right? Wrong. 25% of that goes to humanitarian projects thanks to Bush, and a good portion of it goes to projects like this in the form of all of the various taxes Uncle Sam have blessed me with. First I pay for children that aren't even mine, because children are virtually the tax-vampires of our nation, and now I have to pay for the unborn ones too? Kill yourself.

EDIT: With MUD taxes and property taxes, I may as well give China my business and leave the country. It isn't even worth it here anymore, they even tax you for every item of inventory you haven't sold for that month.

Proof that the body is needed to "tweak" the cells and grow an organism.
QUOTE
Differentiation—The process whereby an undifferentiated embryonic cell acquires the features of a specialized cell such as a heart, liver, or muscle cell.

Stem cells can give rise to specialized cells. When unspecialized stem cells give rise to specialized cells, the process is called differentiation. Scientists are just beginning to understand the signals inside and outside cells that trigger stem cell differentiation. The internal signals are controlled by a cell's genes, which are interspersed across long strands of DNA, and carry coded instructions for all the structures and functions of a cell. The external signals for cell differentiation include chemicals secreted by other cells, physical contact with neighboring cells, and certain molecules in the microenvironment.

http://stemcells.nih.gov/info/basics/basics2.asp

Besides, scientists have apparently been working on moving away from using embryonic stem cells anyways.
QUOTE
Induced pluripotent stem cells—Adult cells reprogrammed to an embryonic stem cell–like state by being forced to express factors important for maintaining the "stemness" of embryonic stem cells (ESCs). Mouse iPSCs were first reported in 2006 (Takahashi and Yamanaka), and human iPSCs were first reported in late 2007 (Takahashi et al. and Yu et al.). Mouse iPSCs demonstrate important characteristics of pluripotent stem cells, including expressing stem cell markers, forming tumors containing cells from all three germ layers, and being able to contribute to many different tissues when injected into mouse embryos at a very early stage in development. Human iPSCs also express stem cell markers and are capable of generating cells characteristic of all three germ layers. Scientists are actively comparing iPSCs and ESCs to identify important similarities and differences.

Hmmm.... To tell y'all the truth, I'm still not sure of this... This could help us greatly or cause more harm then good. To kill potential life to save other lives. That does something to you moral, but then again, the whole thing is in a gray area. I'll watch and see how this thing goes.

I've been noticing some of you guys on this board put WAY too much faith in Science, alone.cool.gif

Nobody is going to make a stem cell gene bomb.

At least, not right now. But it's likely not going to happen.

I can't think of a single reason why anyone would be against stem-cell research.

i heard that stem cells can be taken from an umbilical cord

i don't know if it has to be before the birth, but if not, doctors can just take it when the cut it off and use it for people who need it

This was my impression before this news, and if things end up that way then I suppose the only ones still complaining shouldn't have a say for being ignorant of the situation anyway.

There is potential that an embryo could successfully develop into a child, but there is also potential that an embryo could develop into a stillborn. The factor that remains the same in both scenarios is that the embryo is not a child yet. For this reason it is ludicrous to characterize stem cell research as murder/abortion/wtf and ban it despite the fact that the research could benefit mankind in lieu of cures. I think it's excellent that Obama made this move, and yet I worry that because of this the anti-stems will push to vote him out of office when election comes around once more.
