I'm kinda flip-flopping between GM 5.3a and whatever the last version of 6 was.

I'm sad, not enough people use independent languages. Easy isn't always the way to go, you know. wink.gif

I chose independent because I'm trying to get more into C++, but I still use Game Maker to do actual games. Of course, GM has really been screwing up, so I figure I'll go more with C++.

how so? explain your reasoning, I'd love to learn your point of view.

just because it's "easy", doesn't necessarily mean it's worse. I've seen people make utterly astounding games on GM, far better games then the ones I've seen any solo C++ game developer create.

Cave Story was made in C++.

Point is, people are attracted to simplicity. Whether it is better or not, people will choose the simpler way even if it means sacrificing a few things. C++ is in no way easier than Game Maker, but it is superior because it is a lower level language.

everything done in cave story could easily be done in game maker (it would take some time, of course) your point is?

Take the bubbler, for example. In GM, every bubble would have to be a separate instance, resulting in awful lag, etc. In Cave Story, it's made in C++, so it's so much faster that it's unbelievable how slow GM is.

60 FPS is easy to get with C++. In GM, it's hard to get there.

You can write slow C++ code too. Chances are, with everything that you need to reinvent for your game, you're going to write some naive algorithm or data structure that is going to destroy your performance.

Also I wonder how many people voted C++ to make themselves feel better.
