Three weeks ago wildlife biologists from Mass Wildlife came onto our property and discovered a bear den - a mother with cubs. Today they showed up to remove the bears, and we got a very rare opportunity to not only get close, but also hold the bear cubs for a while.
Once they got the cubs out, they hauled the mother out on a rope, covered her face, and did some work like adjusting her tracking collar and tagging her. Then they weighed her by putting her in a net and lifting it with a log (280 lbs), then put her in a sled and dragged her to the truck. The cubs went into a pet porter.
It was an awesome experience and I'm happy she chose our backyard to overwinter :D

Me and my sister each holding one of the two cubs.

My mother holding a bear ... dawwww

Tranquilized mother bear.
The bear has been relocated to a nearby area, so chances are we'll continue to see these bears occasionally.
