So I am just wondering if any of you have you ever played a bootleg video game before. And if you played more than one, then what is you favorite?

I have always been interested in bootlegs for some reason. I actually still have this game (the colors are actually darker than they appear):

I bought this a LONG time ago and the game still works (but the battery is dead now)

You guys?

They have this appeal to them.
I have one of the Tengen Pacman games, but that's about it.

I've played Tengen Tetris before.

Legend of Legaia.

not a bad game at all, nor a bad boot either. Still, I oddly enjoyed playing an official copy more. Can't say why :/

I had a 100 in 1 Gameboy cartridge. It had both pirated and official Gameboy games.

I even remember it had a NES port of some game involving tanks and an overview like in RPG's

I've played and completed Somari. But that was via an emulator.

Really hard game though.

My parents bought my sister a copy of Minish Cap off of someone on Ebay and when it came in I pointed out that the art on the cartridge didn't look like mine, and they were all "Hmm!" and it was defective and froze a lot. My dad took it apart, even. Yeah, wasn't cool.

Nearly the same story in my case.

Bought a copy of Sonic Advance 3 off Ebay, only to find that it was the leaked beta ROM of the game full of dodgy bugs and other errors that made it unenjoyable.

Returned it and bought it from a store instead.

See, if I was going to sell games like that on eBay and I had a cartiridge with a leaked, bugged SA3 ROM, I would get the latest ROM from one of the fifty million different sites and stick that on. It would save a ton of hassle with complaints and such. wink.gif

More interested in playing than selling.

I also don't like ROM's. I collect real copies, not fake ones.

I played through the pirated Donkey Kong 99 game (Sega Genesis DKC rip off) on my wii via emulation, I had to use SO MANY savestates because the game is so horribly programmed. You'd fall through platforms left and right, the physics/gravity/speed etc are all COMPLETELY different than in the original games, it's not even fun, it's just frustration and it has really bad music. I was just interested in what the ending might have been like, which after all that hard work it just ends up being a completely black screen with the gameplay sprites for DK and diddy at the bottom of the screen. No animation music or credits to speak of.

I had the patience to do that yet didn't have the patience to play through Somari. I haven't actually owned a pirated game either. I'm sure it's not too hard to find one on ebay or maybe even a fleamarket or something if you're lucky.

On eBay I found a copy of Pokemon Green, and was convinced that it was a real English game.

Came in the mail in a gray cart, said "GAME" at the top, and the sticker showed Venasaur, and the logo was Pokemon GS Green. At this point I knew it was a pirated game, but I was hoping that it was a cool hack.

The only difference was that the title Screen said
Pokemon GreenVersion

exactly like that
worst $20 I've ever spent.

I was talking about the guy that sold it to you. You'd think he'd stick a working copy on there rather than a buggy one. It's not like it takes much effort.

I have bootleg 150 in 1 GBA cart I got in Bulgeria. It has two GBA titles, Super Mario Advance 4 ( the main reason I brought it ) and Need For Speed Most Wanted, the rest are all NES rom running from a quite a well made emulator, one that allowed to changed the screen size to the NES native and in that size, the L & R buttons were used to scroll up and down the screen, even with an option to have the screen scrool with the main sprite, though it didn't work with all the NES games. Only gripe was the savestate function didn't work! sad.gif

Its never given me any problems, though SMA4 complains of non existant data corruption whenever I play it, though I can skip it and get into the game.

Generally for modern games I also prefer real copies (but for games on Windows PC I generally don't want any commercially sold games anyways whether they are sold or illegally copied) but sometimes I write software myself or I download ROMs of very old software that isn't being sold anymore and has no chance of being sold in my region anyways even if it was still sold and I don't own the real hardware anyways so I need a emulator. However, it is better if I could write Free Software clones of the game instead, with additional features and such and therefore do not have to violate any laws. Of course it can still be running on an emulator if that is the computer I compile it for, but not always

And I never had a cartridge with bootleg games on it as far as I know.
