Indie means you're an independent developer. It's nice since you don't have to be under someones command on what to make. It's bad since you have to constantly find publishers and you have to pay for development costs out of your pocket. You also won't get a fixed salary while working, so you'll have to rely on the success of the game for your money. Let's say an indie developer team has been working on something for +1 year and they are proud to release it.
If it's unpopular, well, first you may not even find publishers for it. second, you would've spent a year and not gained any financial profit. Let's say a programmer from a major game design company makes something, and it's unpopular. You'll still get paid the same amount, but only the company will suffer loses. Of course and if you're successful with indie development and it does get published, you'll get paid more than someone working under a company, since it's all being distributed to around 10-20 people.
As an indie developer, you shouldn't do the job for cash anyway, or you will most likely not succeed. Most likely, you'll have to work two jobs. One for financing the game, and the actual development of it. Think of it as free lance video game designer.( Although most indie developers don't completely work alone. Usually have around 10-20 people)

There's another option for indie, that's making your game for charity and charity hospitals, like that anti cancer game ("Make A Wish" program for "Red Cross").
