I've discussed this with several GMC Staff, and we've agreed on a solution. The followsmurfing system will be started in a few days*:

New Spellsmurfing and Grammar Rules

* For each spellsmurfing or grammatical error, members will receive one penalty point.

* When the number of penalty points reaches 10, that member will be put on moderator preview. When the number of points exceeds 15, their account will be closed.

* Banned members can re-apply for membership by submittsmurfing a 500-word essay to a moderator. The essay must be free of spellsmurfing and grammar errors, and it must be GM-related. If the moderator approves the essay, the member's account will be re-opened.

We want to be fair, so we will grant the followsmurfing exceptions:

Exceptions

* Non-native English speakers will be allowed an extra 10 points before besmurfing banned.
* Canadians will be allowed 20 extra points.

We expect to have the scorsmurfing system set up in a few days... so we'll start the new rules by the end of next week.

* Moderators are exempt from these rules. Our duties often require us to post quickly, so some errors may occur. However, if a member sees an error in a moderator post, he can report it for "extra credit".

I fell for it until I read "Canadians will be allowed 20 extra points."
