I have no preference (actually I slightly prefer the old one, but the new one is OK too) and I think you should use both pictures (and depending on context)

And if you want transparent then you could use ImageMagick to convert a color to transparency, just select a color not used in the picture and set the background to that color. Or you can fill transparent using the fill function of ImageMagick. Either way is OK.
