| QUOTE (James Bradshaw Layfield @ Jun 10 2009, 11:57 PM) | No, no I'm sure we can all live with the sprites, although it would be nice to see some nice shading. And I'm sure the rest of the animations needed such as walking backwards, crouching and what not will be implemented.
Gameplay is just too frustrating for replay value, walking into a fire ball, dieing and going back to the start is so annoying, especially when you're not too interested anyway.. the levels are nice with the moving backgrounds and all, but that alone isn't going to make an interesting and eye catching level alone. What I mean is you can't just have a moving background and a few blocks chucked around.. it just makes the level seem boring, and that you just were being lazy.
Eye candy is a good thing. And to keep one entertained whilst playing your game should be a priority. A life system would be handy, or at least a working block with a mushroom.
And I don't get the amount of frames you use? seems kinda pointless with a frame with no enemies or puzzles, that you can just walk through, waste of memory imo.
Personally I'd invest in a level designer to give you a hand, you seem to struggle with this. The engines a tad frustrating aswell, his jump is very.. ordinary if you will, and he hardly jumps high at all, I hate that in a game. Characters should have a decent jumping height.
I mean no offense by this. If it was to show off some backgrounds, I'd say excellent, but as a game, I'm not so sure. I think you should really take a step backwards and look at what you've made from a players point of view. I often get very proud of what I've done yet take a look at it with a different point of view and often see that it's really not as great as I thought.
I'm giving you a hand here really, and not sucking your ass like the others. Constructive critism if you will, for example if this is a career goal for you, then expect critism along the way. |
it's supposed to feel incredibly generic at first, which is why I also chose the name "Luigi's Game" which is about as generic of a name as you can get. It's not supposed to have incredibly interesting gameplay elements as the atmosphere is meant to catch the player. You definitely do not play this game for the interesting gameplay, and that was the intention all along. If you've seen some of my previous games, you will know that I am quite able to make interesting gameplay elements, but this time I chose not to. The game is intentionally kept simple all the way through (which is why there's no crouch). The 'no backwards sprite' issue is a choice of mine.

I really don't get why you guys, even MechaBowser himself, are accepting a less-than-perfect game and making excuses for it by way of the "competition rules". I have read and re-read the O.P. of the competition topic and don't see, anywhere, a rule that the game has to be crappy. All I see is a limit on certain graphics of the game. I like that idea, but I don't see how that, graphics, one aspect of the many involved in the success or failure of a game, can be used as an excuse and scapegoat for other, non-related problems. JBL had completely reasonable issues for the game, and he was even POLITE and CONSTRUCTIVE with his comments (isn't that what we all cry for?). It's pretty ridiculous seeing all the defending and excuses-making going on which is essentially negating someone's opinion (is that really right?).

yes and that is extremely nice, ty JBL but a complaint about lack of gameplay elements on a game that is not designed to be exciting on that point is... more or less useless? I mean it's good you mention your frustration with the boss since I didn't have that problem, and that just means there's something that needs to be done. But I am not going to create 8 worlds of exciting gameplay - that's not the purpose of the game at all.
in regard to the minigame compo: I can't control what people make, there is no requirements for games (which is both good and bad) that goes into the minigame compo. Simply just don't vote for those you don't think are appropriate?
